This

one's for anybody on this board who's familiar with the adaptive sport of

Goalball. I used to play it quite a lot when I lived in Oregon but since I

moved to Idaho I haven't found out if there's even a team here. Anyway,

I've thought for a while that it'd be cool if one of our game developers

put together an audio game of Goalball. I remember an interview that Liam

did on Main Menu a few years ago where he also expressed interest in such a

project. So this topic's for anyone who shares this interest. What features

would you like to see if such a game were ever released. Personally I'd

like to see a player editor where you could create your own players like in

Ten Pin Alley. Heck, you could even create your own teams! So what's

everyone else think?

But wait, what's that? A transport! Saved am I! Hark, over here! Hey nonny non, please help!

Agreed brian p. Maybe add in some action? more fast-paste? Heck, I

think some developer might be able to impliment small fights between

players. heh. It would fit in somehow.

I

dunno about fights between players. That's not the sort of thing that

happens very often in Goalball as far as I know. Actually what I was

thinking would be a snarky commentator like in Ten Pin Alley so if a player

accidentally knocks the ball into his own team's goal the announcer would

make a comment. One thing that would be kinda funny from time to time in

such a game is if you went to pass the ball to another player and the either

didn't get the message and so didn't do anything or they went to grab the

ball and either knocked it out of bounds or into our team's goal. That's

happened to me a few times during actual play where I'd have my two

consecutive rolls and then go to pass the ball to one of my teammates only

to have him accidentally score a goal against us as he tried to grab the

ball. I can hear it now.

Player reaches for ball but knocks it into his

team's goal.
Commentator: Hmm, he seems to be confused about which team is

his."
Alternative comment: The idea is to get the ball into the other

team's goal, not yours.

These are just speculations, but I still think

it'd be a cool idea. Maybe there could be comic relief where a player gets

hit in the face or someplace else while attempting to block the ball.

That's exactly what I had in mind. And let me tell ya, I've come very

close to being hit there myself while playing Goalball and it don't feel

good!

Goalball is basically soccer. That is to say there are two teams and two

goals and the object is to defend your goal and get the ball into the other

team's goal. The ball usually has a noisemaker of some kind inside (usually

bells), so the players can hear it coming. The game is usually played

indoors and its played down on the floor so knee and elbow pads are

advisable. Anyway there are two halves to each game, usually two to three

minutes each (that varies depending on where you play sometimes). The team

with the most points by the end of the second half is the winner. There are

three positions on each team and thre players. There's the center guy and

then what I like to call the wingmen, who take the left and right sides. You

start kneeling down usually and only stand up to roll the ball (that gives

you more control). Then when you hear the ball coming you stretch out on

your side to try and block it. As I said, knee and elbow pads are very

advisable. Each player can only roll the ball twice (or maybe three times, I

forget), and each team has eight seconds (sometimes ten), to roll the ball

once they take possession. When a team is awarded a penalty, two players

from the opposing team are withdrawn for one turn, leaving one player to

defend their entire area. It's actually quite a complex game. You may want

to do a web search for goalball (and yes as far as I know it's one word).

I

really wanted to do goalball, but the game that is looking more and more

possible is beep baseball.  It's definetly down there on my list of games

to mae which btw.  I have a really large list of ideas.  you should ask my

friends.  I have all this different prototypes of things laying around.

like a streets of rage thing, and I have the basic of a racing game, and...

oy.  so many others.  beep baseball could be a reality.  goalball could be

as well.  getting goalball sounds is a bit tough.  I don't have the

equipment to record goalball sounds.  how ever.  I do have an old goal ball

laying around.  maybe one day it'll happen, but let's see how beep

baseball works for me.

Hmmm, don't think I've played Beep Baseball much. The name sounds

familiar but I don't think I've played it. Either that or it was so long

ago that I don't remember. Maybe we ought to trade ideas. Sounds like

we've got a few in common.
