Having bumpers in the charging port and headphone socket is probably wise in some cases. My previous iPhone suffered from fragments of dog biscuit in the headphone socket from my changing what I keep in which pocket at various times. I've since been careful not to reuse the same pocket for my phone and dog biscuits, I suppose it depends what kind of random crap you have in your pockets and how linty your pockets tend to get.

@Paddy, I do have my stuff categorised on my phone. my first page is for general aps, and most of the stuff I don't think is important or don't care about is in folders, like all the pictures stuff is in a photography folder). My second page is four games, which  are all categorized by developer. My third page has all the satnav type stuff on it, such as maps and blind square. The irritating thing is having to spend ages wandering the screen trying to put ap icons together, indeed I sort of dread buying a new ap if it has to go in a new folder or on a new page for the time it'll take me poking at the screen and swearing. (I got lucky in puting inquisitor's heartbeat into the same folder as Inquisitor and labelling it Ticonblu, but when I tried blindfold racing getting the bloody thing to just go onto the second page was a nightmare!

I dont think adding some better controls for this would be so difficult, just having a "new folder" button or a "new folder" command (it could go in the search box) to let you create a new folder, name it and say what page it should go on, and then when you use edit mode with tap and hold on an ap, you flick up and down on each ap to assign to a folder, and hit a "done" button to perform the icon placement.

Much as i admire Vo, it sort of irritates me that apple expects blind people to perform a drag and drop just because that is what sighted users do and don't offer an alternative, ----although for most part I am well impressed with how vo works (particularly sinse I've recently found the vertical navigation setting on the roater which is your best friend in many situations and can save a lot of flicks especially in games like Kodp or star traders elite).

As to covers, well the surviver comes with flaps of the same shock absorbent foam that makes up the case to go over all the jacks on the device so I've never had to worry about crumbs etc getting in there, ---- though what I do with dog biscuits Cx2 is have a shoulder bag (my parents amusingly refer to it as my man bag), with one separate compartment where I keep Reever's biscuits, her boal and her dog permission card, and another larger compartment where I keep things like my Iphone (as well as the charger when it's not in use and extra clip for attaching the surviver case to things). I also have some other useful things in there  like my pocket comb, pitch pipe (in case I need to sing on the fly sinse while I'm good at pitching myself it's nice to have an aide when warming up.

My bag also has some other pockets where I keep crazier things, from my wallet to my micro umbrella to a packet of extra strong mints, a disabled loo key, and some bags in case Reever has an unexpected accident, ---- indeed my bag is sort of like the Doctor's pockets full of random junk, though I wish it was dimentionally transcendental, sinse then I could fit my bluetooth keyboard in there too big_smile.

It's bigger on the inside?

I quite often use a treat pouch with a mesh pocket on the front for bags in case of mishap, and I have a water bottle where the lid acts as a cup with a shoulder sling for it though on longer journeys like out of town I use a backpack with the bottle and a collapsible bowl. In winter of course my coats spoil me for pocket space so I don't need the pouch.

Apparently the Doctor does have pockets that are bigger o the inside, which would be awsome! sadly I just have to make do with my bag. yep I should've said collapsable bowl.

Generally I don't find it necessary to carry water for Reever sinse usually wherever I'm going will have somewhere, toilet (disabled toilets are great for feeding your dog when out). I do quite often carry a water bottle, but that's usually for me when I'm singing and I don't tend to like to keep it in the same bag as my Iphone for obvious reasons.

Even in winter I tend to take my bag rather than using pockets because it's handy to have lots of spare articles, indeed in a city like Durham having a micro umbreller is often necessary, plus sinse I've started using blind square I use the clip that came with my surviver case (which is a dam strong clip), to attach the phone to the shoulder strap of my bag under my left ear, thus negating the need for a headset that risks cutting out background noise but still making certain I can hear the names of places around me.

Have you considered Aftershokz? Note the odd spelling. They're bone conduction headphones, they go round the back of your head and loop over your ear a bit like some headphones might except instead of cups the ear is open and there's a thing in front of your ear hole which transmits the noise. I use a set, the one with a microphone built in, and they work pretty well for blind square as well as just listening to books or music around the house. I find I don't tend to veer off course in the house as much with these as with normal earphones.

I've heard of those and would like to try a set for interest's sake to see how they would help with blind square etc, but to be honest for hearing books etc on my Iphone I just usually use the speaker. Then again I've been wadering around with audio books playing on one device or other sinse I was 8 and had a tape recorder so it's no problem to me to cary my iphone from room to room, and if I am doing something like music or audio dramas that is good enough to want headphones, if I'm in my flat I'll use my sanheisa momentums, ---- or if I say just want some music in the room I'll use my desktop's logitech quad  speakers or my sterrio system.

Well I like wandering around the house doing odds and sods while listening to something, plus the headphones help overcome the background noise slightly. I do carry my phone round with me sometimes, just depends what I'm doing. The aftershokz are great for out and about though, and the remote button works with blindsquare to access menus without having to use the touch screen.

My momentums have a remote control, though sinse they're wired it's a bit pointless sinse generally if I'm close enough to plug them in I'm close enough to use the remote on my phone, but I didn't buy them  for their remote capability but for their sound quality.

Generally if I'm cleaning or washing up or whatever I'll just carry my phone around and put it on a window sill or somewhere safe, though background noise does   sometimes get in the way.

As I said, the  Aftershocks  are something I wouldn't mind seeingin  action, but wouldn't really want to buy unseen, sinse fundamentally I already have an amazing set of wired headphones, and my  sanheisa earbuds are fine when I'm out as well as probably being the best sound quality available for 30 quid, I wouldn't want to carry my Momentums as they're total cutout headphones and  are thus slightly larger, plus were sort of insanely expensive, though worth it  for the sound quality.

My point about the remote button is BlindSquare allows you to access it through the remote button. You press the button once and it starts reading off options, when it comes to the one you want you click the button again. You can check location in case you have shake turned off and don't want to use the screen, activate sleep mode which deactivates with yet another button press at some later time, and so on. I completely see what you mean about not wanting to buy them without first hand experience though.

Well I can see the advantage of that sinse shaking the phone isn't always convenient, as I said I would like to try them out, I actually wonder if I went to an Apple shop if I could try them there?

What, I wonder, is the strange process by which one convinces oneself that there are no dangers in ones own home, by which big headphone enjoyment is possible while one wanders around in it? It's always such an enjoyable state to be in. (I prefer cordless headphones to carrying the iPhone, but that's just me.)

Just myself, as usual.

2014-07-24 00:46:11

Well Sebby I usually only use my big headphones when actually sitting down and listening constantly to something like music or an audio drama I want full immercian with, with audio books or reading stuff with vo I just tend to carry my Iphone.

then again, sinse I live on my own (accept for Reever), I do wonder exactly what   audio hazards I'd be listening for? sinse anything potentially dangerous and audio would be something like a kettle which I'd turn on myself anyway, and once I knew it was on there probably wouldn't be  an issue.

Indeed, when I was listening to We're alive I got so  taken up with the thing I didn't want to stop listening for dinner, so took my Iphone and some wired headphones with me  while I chucked frozen pizza in the oven, then when I pulled it  out.  and gnoshed it.

It's lucky I don't get nausia sinse that was  the  episode in the zombie filled arena :d.

2014-07-24 01:43:29

I've done audio dramas and kettles at the same time; no problem. big_smile

My question was more along the lines of: isn't it weird and wonderful how one convinces oneself of that particular freedom of movement by sheer force of reason? Try as I might, the idea of doing this while any of my relations were about is unimaginable, because it's just not possible that they'd get out of the way, and stay out of the way, when they should. But when it's just me and Tab in my own home, no problem; we understand each other perfectly, and she'll always give advance notice of her feline presence and not impose herself. smile

Just myself, as usual.

2014-07-24 07:24:54

Well Sebby I've done audio and kettles before, I just tend to find unless I use headphones the kettle drowns out the audio, especially when filling it.

I hadn't really considdered the thing of people being present or absent relating to headphone use, but then again I can often see when someone is at least relatively close, though my lack of spacial coordination still often means I need to be careful before people get to that point (it's possible for me to see something or someone and still walk into it because I can't judge precisely where it is in space very well).

I  tend to use headphones often when on trains or travelling in cars, but I don't tend to like to use them in the same room with other people sinse generally if I wish to be alone enough to wear headphones and get absorbed in something I don't want to be in people's presance, while if I were around people (my parents included), I'd probably feel I  needed to interact with them in some way.

This might change if I lived with someone full time and shared a room of course, sinse then headphones would be a good way of not disturbing them, though that is fairly unlikely to happen.

I have Blindsquare wearing my iPhone in my pocket with a headset connected to it. I turned off shaking, because it allways tried to read where I am and so on. lol

I had the same trouble with shaking when I have it in my trouser pocket, not a problem in a jacket pocket so much of course.

Dark, if your local Apple store sells Aftershokz I'm sure they'll let you have a look. Can't hurt to ask in any case, and they're not exactly a tenner like a lot of earbuds are. I don't tend to travel the country much but if I ever find myself in the region of Durham or you find yourself in the vicinity of Hull or Scunthorpe for some bizarre reason I'd be more than happy to hop over and give you a demo.

For some reason I seem to have particularly difficulty walking in a straight line, earbuds seem to make this worse even in my own home. I think it's something to do with not being able to sense the acoustics of my surroundings as a cue so I veer quite heavily and end up facing entirely the wrong direction, sometimes as much as 120 degrees or so off course if it gets really bad. That said when I was sighted I always had serious coordination issues so maybe it's all related.

Interesting.

Obviously people are all different, but I think for me it's more a matter of confidence; once I'm sure there's nobody there to get in the way, and it's my own home full of the things I'm familiar with, how can I possibly be misled even when I've got the cordless Sennheisers on? I'm happy to drown out everything, for that kind of peace. Of course with people around, it's implausible on a social level if not for a practical one, but regardless, my brother is often home and he too absorbs himself in his own stuff. Suits me, you know. smile

Well when I was young they came up with all kinds of theories about my coordination and clumsiness, from mild cerebal palsy to dyspraxia. I still think dyspraxia is the closest they came to figuring out what exactly it is with me but when they sent me to a specialist he insisted my maths was too good for someone to have dyspraxia. Dyspraxia mostly fits in a way but isn't quite 100 percent.

When I lived in colidge and had a set of cordless headphones I used to do some crazy things as far as going down the corridor to the kitchin, or even dashing up three floors (the block was on a hill), to pick up a pizza I'd ordered. that was sort of hilarious particularly sinse between my wirless keyboard and headphones I could use my desktop from about 30 foot distance, and if I just used the headphones could still hear about 100 feet away.

Generally if I absolutely need a streight line I'll line myself up to something, though usually either I'll see an object or know where it is in my own flat anyway Sebby as you said.

Interestingly enough Cx2, the sanheisa buying used to cost thirty quid but now have gone down to twenty, though are still probably the best quality for the price range (at least according to the ones I tried at my very nice hifi shop), plus of course sinse they're Sanheisa and not tied to apple's weerd thing with the two ring jacks they'll work in any device (I still used them on my laptop at my parents as well as for my Iphone, even though now my laptop stays put and my Iphone is portable).

That might actually be another considderation with the aftershocks sinse I doubt they will work on anything none Apple (silly Apple).

It comes with an adapter but I'm not sure what the adapter's for, I've also previously used Apple headsets with non-Apple devices without too much issue though not all devices seem to work like this, I suspect some of the sockets cheap out on contact area. You can probably get another adapter for standard 3.5mm if you need to in any case.

Apple's 3.5mm connector is quite nice if your device supports it actually, it gives you stereo sound and a microphone input with a single connector which would normally require two plugs. For a phone it's ideal, I suppose they could have used the existing 2.5mm size for headsets but this way you can choose to use standard headphones or speakers should you wish which is a big benefit.

You can actually get little remote adaptors, which effectively turn any pair of headphones into an Apple-compatible remote+headset. This is how I used to do it before Apple introduced their in-ear earbuds which are good enough for my purposes while out if I need that kind of intensity.

Just myself, as usual.

2014-07-24 20:12:23

I don't know I once tried a set of earbuds (not made by apple but designed for the Iphone), that would work with nothing but. They had the standard 3.5 inch jack, but there was a limited number of rings that made them impossible to use on other devices, though I didn't know adapters were available to bypass the restriction.

Yep, I think this was from the days when Apple made one of their iPod Shuffles controllable only using the remote on earbuds. A farce of corporate moronity to rival insisting on a licence fee for Firewire, which would be the connection bus for iPods.

2014-07-24 21:19:47

Sounds about right, Apple have made moves that way in the past what with lightning connectors replacing usb etc, though hopefully they won't try and isolate things too much, indeed the more Apple isolate their files and products the less I personally would want to use them, witness my above comment about not wanting to buy from Itunes sinse it's so hard to get stuff out of that program and just as standard files. I actually ended up taking that set of earbuds back and exchanging for my usual sanheisa ones instead.

Unfortunately it's sometimes rather hard to distinguish malice from stupidity. I actually think Lightning was a good overall strategy, but it had some very bad side-effects which Apple should have foreseen, most importantly the amount of inconvenience it would cause people. This is why I refuse to buy any equipment with proprietary interfaces for general use, e.g. I will never accept hi-fi systems or speakers with built-in dock connectors.

I still don't see what you have to fear from iTunes; the Music files are written right there in your home folder, you know, and should not be at all difficult to find and extract. Just standard, DRM-free AAC music. Be more careful about the other types of media though; that might be DRM-protected.

Just myself, as usual.
