Hi,
My friend doesn't have the stereo mix. Neither mono or stereo mix is
listed in his settings for recording in volume control properties. What
could be wrong?

Make sure your friend has the properties checked in the
list view of properties in the properties dialog.

In
the properties dialog, Stereo mix is not an option to check.
