So.  I wonder what Judgement day from www.l-works.net is gonna be like?  I certainly hope it's cool.

I really! like the sound of that trophy system and the unlockables, and only a few more short weeks (assuming no major hickups), is it me, or has this game been developed astonishingly fast!

Btw, Sympathy reguarding your Grandfather Liam.

thanks for the kind words.  papa was one of the reasons the game was delayed.  Not to blame him, but I wanted to take time out to attend to things.  With the way it's going, it should be released on time.  I'm extremely excited about the game.  A lot of people think it's gonna be like troop, and they're right.  But. I promise the unlockable system is gonna be awesome.  I've got 43 trophy ideas laid out so far, and who knows.  t he number might grow.  The people who are testing the game absolutely love it, and it's only in a late alpha stage so far.  I can't wait till cut scenes, music, and the final surprises are gonna be put in.  I hate to sound like a salesman, but I think 25 dollars is an unbeatable price for this.  I really wanted to charge 30, and I really feel like it's worth it, but I don't want to rip you guys off.  the other thing I will do when the time rolls around is preorders.  I know how baddly they've gone in the past with certain other companys, and I want to try and repair some of that mistrust.  I think everyone who knows me well knows I do the best I can do deliver as quickly as possible.  But, keep your ears pealed.  I'll try and put together an audio demonstration of it this weekend.  I'm dying to publicly demo three of the bonus games that will be in there.

wow, it sounds very good.
i have a little idea about a cut scene you could try, this is for the game over sequence:
supreme command arver: "so then, the allies have finally been defeated. now, the world is mine!
(lots of gunfire and screams, and then a sort of weerd voice says: "game over!")
it sounds a bit too much like super liam but... well... hmm. a bit different.

2006-06-02 18:35:55

As I said, I'm actually amazed how fast this game's been developed. Admittedly I've been rather busy with a production recently, but even so.

I'm very glad the cut scenes are back! I recently finished my second run through of superliam, and it was chiefly to here the cut scenes.

Personally, I'm not too bothered about getting high scores in games, I'm more interested in exploring all the storoy and content that any game has to offer ----- which is why I'm looking forward to unlockables so much.

As far as pricing goes, I'm probably not in a position to comment, sinse the exchange wrate betwene the pound and the dollar is very good for me at the moment ----- even with all the random extra charges, Lords of the Galaxy was only just over twenty quid, though it was 38 dollars, which isn't too bad at all ----- the average Gamecube or Ps2 game comes out betwene thirty and fourty five pounds, for example.

Unlockables are good, but I don't think they should make up most of the game; the game has to be interesting to play so you would want to unlock them.  No, I take that back; te unlockables should be kind of a bonus; the game should be the thing to look forward to playing.  Once all unlockables have been found it should still be fun to play the main game at least once in a while.
It's like someone on some list of game development "truisms" said; "You know you're game's in trouble when half the code is easter eggs." (not the exact quote)

I agree with all folks, except for the ending seen. I wanna see what Liam can put in! My advice for a cut seen is for the ending when you beat it. Show the character and his troop going after the men, make a chase seen with a lot of gunfire. Finally, you discover that the leader is a bot built by people higher than he does. Have the character wipe him out in a brutal way, MK style! lol joking, unless you really wanna do it.

4 bonus levels? wow, this one's gonna be pretty awesome. i'll definitely at least try it and maybe buy it too if i can.

2006-06-03 13:10:07

i bet the game's gonna be 100 mb in file size, or maybe a little less.
it could be a problem for dialup users.
unless you do that file split thing, or cd rom or something.

2006-06-03 14:00:15

On the news page, it does say that L-works might be able to send out games on Cd, which would be good for anyone using dial up.

Obviously, a game that wasn't basically interesting to play couldn't be improved, no matter how many unlockables you stick in. It's probably from playing Metroid and Mega man games, but I really do enjoy finding game content.

The game ending of "You win! fatality!" would be slightly amusing Lol. I'm not sure about making Ather a bot though, (though continuous plot would be nice).

Hay! here's an idea. You confront Ather in a final battle atop a big flying space station thingy.

Ather: "Join me!"
You: "Never!"
Ather: "It is your destiny, I! am! your Father!"

you: "Noooooooooo!!!! it's not true!"

You then get your hand chopped off, fall of the space station, and have to wait for the next game, return of the Judgement day to finally get rid of Ather vader, ;D.

cool!  I like the machine gun, and the fact that there's no targit sound ----- it makes the game feel more realistic Imho, the repare stuff for the base also looks interesting.

Oh Btw, appologies for miss-pronouncing Supreme commanderAther's name in my last dreadful pun, orphius pronounces it to rhyme with father.

Go kick ass Liam! That game sounds like it'll be a thriller. Only suggestion. Is it possible to make it multi-player? Say, update it after the actual game's released. Just a suggestion. Say like a deathmatch thing, where you can use the various different vehicles, and weapons.. so.. see what you think, but I hope you can get it in there. I think JD being multi-player would be really cool.

i like the audio trailer, it's definitely going to be awesome. I'm really looking forward to this one.

2006-06-05 08:12:23

the game itself isn't really possible for multi play.  it's an option, but.. don't hold out on it happening.

Hmm, sinse Judgement day is a space invaders type game (all be it an extremely interesting one), I'm not sure how you'd go about doing multi-play. I suppoe one player ould set off vehicles for the other to destroy, but i don't really see how (for the defending player anyway), this would be any different from the main game, ad I don't really see how the attacking player could use any real tactics.

ah, yet another space invaders type game, but that's a good thing.  Good to have multiple games in the same genre to pick from.  I really like games like that.

I would only add 2 things.  First off have the game at least save your high score.  Taht way if you didn't make the score boards online assuming JD will support that, you could still try to best your own score.  I like doing that in other games like Super Egg Hunt, but those gams don't save your high score so you jsut have to remember it.

The other thing I would add is support for gamepads like Alien Outback has which is the whole reason I got that game.  I'm not counting on that though, because it might be hard to put in.  I love the music in judgement day though!

2006-06-06 11:14:39

gamepads are probably not gonna happen right away.  heh.  I will ahve highscores, and a better system for saving them.  I do want gamepad support, but I can't find a download of the direct x sdk now.  even the bsc games site doesn't have it.  if anyone has a copy, let me know.  I sort of need it for joystick support.

Keep in mind that the music in the audio trailer probably isn't going to necessarily be the same as in the actual game, at least that's the feeling I got from the trailer itself. I really like that boss track though. It'll be even more interesting with cutscenes thrown into the mix. Can't wait to play it. And if the game does come out on time I know what I'll be getting myself as a birthday present. Well, we'll see.

But wait, what's that? A transport! Saved am I! Hark, over here! Hey nonny non, please help!

hi liam

I can help you in regard to joystick support, I have the direct x 8 sdk + a book related to direct x and user input...
just contact me over msn
thanks
regards

2006-06-07 13:25:01

actually.  an hour after I wrote this message, I found out that I had it on a disc.  I won't put joystick support in the first version, but subsequent version should have it.  and while I'm on it.  judgment day is spelled judgment day and not judgement day.  I have a lot of finding and replacing to do.  heh

That's weerd, I've always spelt it judgement, with an E, I know my spelling ability isn't exactly perfect, but having written essays on ethics for the last 7 years (counting my A-levels), I've been writing the word Judgement a lot, and that's the way my spellcheckers have always done it. I wonder if it's one of those English vs American spellings.

Btw, I remember there was a similar arguement when the game of the film Terminator II judgement day was released, so you can be sure Liam that your carrying on a great gaming tradition ;D.

ya.  it's an american Vs. english thing.  Since I'm in america, I'm going to stick to the American spelling.  Though, I don't agree with it.
