hi everyone.
today i bring to you the readme of the collection of emulators that i'm developing, it will probably be uploaded tomorrow, at least the light version, containing
only the emulators.
keep in mind i haven't developed the emulators, only a menu system to run then and the documentation, i'll post the readme here for those of you that are curious.

Welcome to this portable pack of emulators that are totaly accessible for the blind and sighted alike!

Contents:

1. Features & introduction
2. Requirements
3. List of emulators
4. what's a Rom?
5. Controls
6. Updates

----------

1. Features & introduction:

Do you remember the good old times were you could play classic consoles
such as Super Nintendo, Mega Drive, Playstation one and others, or
peraps even the games that you played in arcade machines?
And if you don't remember or haven't played these games, you don't know
what you're missing.. you should start playing these games right now!
You will be impressed.

Features:
*Easy to use menu system that allows you to choose the emulator that you want and start playing it right away.
*Completely portable, meaning that you can burn these emulators to a cd
/ dvd or just copy it to a flash drive and play the games when you're
travelling, in a friend's house or whatever you are.
All these emulators should store the settings only in theyr directory,
so the registryshouldn't be changed and it shouldn't copy any files to
the computer, that's why it's portable.
I'm not a programmer, so i don't know if all these emulators are *100%*
portable, but they should be from what i used and read about then.
*Two versions: light and full.
What it means?
the light version will contain only the emulators,
meanwhile the full version contains the emulators collection with some
games that are playable for the blind.

2. Requirements
*Most of the emulators will run fine with low requirements, but i
recommend at least:
*1 gb of ram
*a decent video card(maybe even 128 mb will do)
*a dual-core processor
*some gigs to store the roms that you download, if you want complete
collections, be prepared to have 50 gb's, but if you want only a few
games, 2 or 3 gigs will be enough. It Depends what games you download
and theyr sizes, it's hard to tell the HD space that will be used.

3. List of emulators

*Nintendo System Entertainment
*Sega genesis(also known as Mega Drive in some countries):
*Super Nintendo System Entertainment
*Sony Playstation One
*Nintendo 64
*Game Boy Advance / color
*Winkawaks and Mame (multiple arcade machine emulators)

4. What's a Rom?

A rom is a file with the game's detail. Each console used something to
load the data of the rom and play. Consoles like the Game Boy Advance,
Sega Genesis, Super Nintendo and others used cartridges, while others
like the Playstation One used cds.
But this information doesn't matters, the only thing that you will need
is the rom file of the games that you want.
Most of the rom files that you will download are compressed in a zip
formate, or the files will have a specific formate that the emulator can
read.
If you search on google for roms you will find lots of websites with
then, i'll include a separate file with some sites that i know and
trust.

5. Controls

Here are the controls for all the emulators included in this package
OBS: I don't know the controls for player 2 in any of the emulators.
some of the emulators will come with documentation, so you could check,
or even test and see if you discover what they are. if you're interested
in helping and giving me these keys, i'll certainly add then and thank
you in the credits section.

hi, i love this idea.  thing is, by the emulators being accessible, what do you mean? for i'm guessing you won't be able to read game menus as its impossible with a screen reader i'm told.  well, apparently you can read some with nvda i'm told but not sure on that one.

2011-03-24 13:14:07

hi.
you won't be able to read game menus, but all the menus of the emulators, configuring then, etc
are accessible. in the game menus the users could write documentation for different game menus
and i could add in the documentation.
when navigating menus in console games it's all about memorizing
the options. but don't worry, when you get used to it you won't mind
having to do it.

Just a thought: couldn't you use autoit to make some accessible menus?  That way, you could let the user make his choice in the accessible menu, then the program could just perform the required key presses to set those options automatically, and put the user in the game, all ready to play.

Hi! That idea of DRG is great! I loved playing with emulators! It was nice to read that there will be games that are accessible for the blind. Also, a nice idea to write documentations for some game menus (and perhaps how to play them).

And the idea with autoit sounds great, too. If such a thing were possible, that were a dream. :-)

This is great. I have been using emulaters for a long time to play old games. I honestly thought that little or no interest would exsist in this comunity. I am particularly interested in the PS1 emulater.

2011-03-24 16:57:58

@fastfinge
i'm using Qmenu to create a menu with choices to run the emulators
and to view theyr respective websites / documentation, such as
readme, contact information and licence / disclaimer.
when you open the emulators, all theyr options are accessible, they will use a "file/open"
then you just choose the rom and start playing right away.
i'm already adding games to the full version, it will be around 500 or 600 mb compressed, but
there will be good games in it..
psx: gekido(beat'em up, stereo sounds, fantastic game)
sega genesis: 3 versions of streets of rage, samurai shodown
gba: dragon ball super sonic warriors, 3 versions of mk, final fight, sound voyager(amazing!)
snes: mk 1 2 3, ultimate mk 3, final fight.
project 64: golden nugget 64, super smashbros, wrestling games.
any ideas of what else to include?

Perhaps an idea were to add some street fighter games. these are games I love to play and they are available for many consoles.

hi, i already added street fighter games for the gba, snes, genesis
i might add marvel vs street fighter in the winkawaks emulator if i manage
to make it work, i'm having some problems with the portable version of it

Excellent idea Drg, and I think fastfinge's idea would be an excellent addition.  The hardest part about automating the menus would be taking the time in each game to type out the menu choices for the automation tool.  If you're willing to spend that time, I'm sure people would LOVE actually hearing the game menus rather than having to memorize them.

hi @bladestorm.
some of the games that you mentioned are already included but i forgot to say here.
the question is: the full version is already 950 mb,
are you guys whiling to download a gig[peraps compressed to 500 or 600 mb]
of roms? i assure you.. they are worth it, i'm including only the games
i've played, and only accessible ones. bushido blade 2 is included.
so what are your comments?
unfortunately i won't add voices to the menus -- there are so many games and i don't have the
time to do it and someone to read the menus.
however, if any of you are whiling to create a project that allows a screen reader
to read the menus or something like that, i'm sure i'll add it in this collection
and update it frequently with new changes.
and if i receive menus of certain games, i'll add files with each of the game menus described
in text.

Drg, could you perhaps release a pack containing just the emulators and a few dozen of your personal favorite roms?  Then you could bundle the rest of the roms into related groups and post them separately.  I think it would be easier for someone to decide to download "Rom pack #5" with a short download time and then grab other packs if they feel like it.  Splitting it up solves that problem of a single Huge download.

Once you've released the rom pack, I'll take a look and see if I think up a quick and easy to way automate the menus.  If I come up with something I'll let you know.

I had another game which is playable for the snes. Its name is teenage mutant ninja turtles - tournament fighters. but I know there are different versions. the name coule be "teenage mutant hero turtles - tournament wariors", too. Don't know all names of the versions now. but it's a very nice game.

hi aprone.
the thing is: these games that i'm including are my personal favorites,
and i was tempted to add much, much more, it was a really hard choice for me to do.
if, for example, i remove the bushido blade and some of the n64 games, like the wrestling ones
i think the size will go down 400 mb or even more.
damn, and i forgot about pokemon stadium.
i'll see what i can do
these rom packs won't help with the size i think, cause depending in the console that you
choose no matter if you add 10 games or 30, the size will always be more than 200 mb or so
because quality of sounds and other things.
@jana i added teenage mutante ninja turtles all versions for the snes
and 2 and 3 for nes.
the light version will contain only the emulators, i could include the gba, nes, gens snes games.
what you all think??

hmm, I'm not sure then drg.  If you don't have a choice then we'll make due with the large download.  I'm sure it will be worth it in the end anyway!  big_smile

I've another game which is good to play. It's for the SNES again and its name is "dragon - the bruce lee story". Don't know if you added this. It is a beat'em up game.

2011-03-24 19:27:44

a couple things here
1: some more games that I will try to upload from my collection
winkawaks
warriors of fate, called tenchi no kurau 2 in japan
beat-em-up using swords/fists/picked up weapons and mounts like horses for mounted combat
battle circuit
beat-em-up again, with conversation boxes and occasional freezes which I am trying to figure out
marvel superheroes VS street fighter
marvel VS capcom
super street fighter 2 turbo
samurai showdown 1-5
sengoku 3: a hack and slash side scroller
sometimes you actually have to go backwards which is weird
aliens VS predator: beat-em-up with katana, smartgun/plasma caster as ranged attack, fists, grenades, etc
snes
dragon ball Z super butouden 1 and 2
2 fighting games based off this very very good anime
yu yu hakusho tokubetsuhen: again based off a good anime, kind of hard to describe, use spirit gauge attacks to do damage, and special gauge to do power ups
basically a sinimatic fighting game
yu yu hakusho 2 and final: street fighter type fighting games
these'll add up about 300 megs
2: winkawaks and some snes cheats for anyone who doesn't want to keep dying in a beet-em-up or is getting used to a game's sounds and controls
3: my personal controls for both emulators, which let player 1 play without having to unload screen readers, because the arrows are not used!
some suggestions
why not instead of programming some huge project for possibly a hundred different menus for large games, put up an archive of menu guides and send them to matheus, so he can bundle a new archive with a menus folder
extending that, we could put in moves lists, and game controls for anyone who doesn't want to go through gamefaqs.com looking for the game
hoped these help, and sorry for the overkilled extremely detailed long bomb poste lol

Ok guys. I am getting really pumped about this! DRG will you share with us soon.

2011-03-24 20:44:13

hi all, thank you all very much for the games
i'm adding all of then to the collection.
ok, i finaly decided: there won't be a light version and a full version,
there will be just one version and packs that you can add with roms, you will have to add then
manualy, so i'll create a few more documents explaining how to do it for each
emulator and then will share it here.
so the rom packs will be available for different consoles, like one for snes, one for winkawaks
one for psx, etc.
i'll try to release it as soon as possible, probably tomorrow, but i'll try
to upload it today.
i don't know if the ftp server of my friend will be up, let's see.

Hi
I'm looking realy forward to this. I am blind and have never played these games. Are they all fully accessible for the blind and can they be played without sighted assistance? I am so excited, thank you drg. That's so cool.

2011-03-24 21:18:34

hello nik.
most of the games that i'll include in the packs are playable for those that are blind.
the only thing that you will have to do is memorize the menus, and some games could
offer some difficulties, if you take a beat em up as a example, there can be platforms
and such that make it difficult for you to complete
the games. it depends what game you will play.
in the future i can also make a series of podcasts explaining how to play games that weren't
designed with the blind in mind, but are playable.
really great that you all like this idea.
i'm looking more and more to your opinions, and i'm uploading the
collection of emulators[without games] right now, it should be available in 10 minuts or so

Hi,
Cool, will documentations be included, wich gives tipps and other things to manage the difficoulties as a blind person, too? That would be great, so anyone can play it.

2011-03-24 21:52:47

Hi:

The podcasts would be good. I was born blind, and nobody in my family played console games *at all* while I was growing up. I have recently acquired a Wii that me and my girlfriend are both enjoying the heck out of, as it's one of the few computer gaming experiences we find ourselves able to share, but that's my only experience with console gaming.  I found the controllers and random placement and names of buttons confusing even with the wii, so I suspect attempting to play an emulated game using an emulated controller by pressing b on the keyboard and meaning x on the controller or whatever will be extremely confusing at first.  So, a gentle intro to some of the games would probably be helpful.

Are any of these games multiplayer? If so, how does that work? Do we both play on the same computer, sharing a keyboard and monitor? Or do we need two computers? Or two keyboards?  If I/we decide to get a joystick, can it be used with any/all of these emulators?  This question is interesting to me, as most accessible games cannot be shared by someone with perfect vision and someone with none at all. They either have no visuals at all, or in the case of Audio Quake the person with vision has an advantage that's so massively unfair it can't be compensated for effectively.  Either that, or I'm just really terrible at Audio Quake and am missing something obvious.  Anyway, to get back on topic, an emulator pack looks like a really interesting way to try things without investing in consoles and spending a lifetime on ebay looking for out of print games.

2011-03-24 21:53:33

DRG, will you be posting rom packs as well? Sorry if you already answered that.

2011-03-24 21:56:34

finaly! after almost two days working on it, documentation, carefuly thinking what roms to add
to it, the version 0.1 of this emulators collection is out!
grab it from
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1695866/Emulato … n%200.1.7z
try it and please give feedback!
nik, in the future there will be documentations
for specific games, so it will help you to play then by giving move lists,
tips, hints, cheats and everything else. but the users should contribute
to see it added in the near future.
please read all documentation before asking questions and trying the emulator.
