Having beaten Papa Sangre, I thought I’d share some thoughts and observations.
First impression:
My reaction when I first saw the price of the game was similar to that of many: wow! What an expensive app. However, after purchasing and playing the game, I must say that while I would have preferred to pay less than it was, the price for what I got was not unreasonable. I’ll break things down below:
Controls:
The controls in this game are extremely easy to learn but are not so simplistic as to make the game boring. The device is oriented in landscape mode with the home button to the left. The bottom half of the screen is broken up into two sections representing the left and right foot. You tap these in succession to make your character walk or run by tapping them faster. If you go to fast, you will trip and fall, usually with unfortunate consequences. Above these is a compass which takes up the entire top half of the screen. You turn by moving your finger left or right along this to make your character turn left or right respectively. Those are all the controls. In between levels there is a continue button you have to press which is in the center of the screen or you can turn VoiceOver on to hit it.
Levels:
The first three levels of the game are a tutorial which will walk you through learning the controls and picking up objects. After that, the remainder of the twenty-five levels are the storyline of the game. As you progress through, a narrator will set the scene for you at the start and end of each level, and sometimes guide you or give you hints about what to do next. Each level is a specific challenge, which can take about two-three minutes each. You complete the level by picking up the music notes, and then walking to the door out. You can be hindered by special surfaces which will slow you or broadcast your position to any enemies in the level, and said enemies which will try to chase and kill you.
Enemies:
There is always at least one enemy or trap in each level. You do not do combat with the enemies, simply avoid them, which can be harder than it sounds as certain actions will telegraph your position to them. If an enemy catches you or you stumble into it, you will die. Dying will cause the level to end, and the narrator to either give you a pointer how to avoid getting killed, or make a sarcastic comment. My favorite death comment from one musically oriented level: “Crash, bang, snuffled. Encore!” You must then start the level over from the beginning.
Difficulty:
For an experienced audio gamer, this game will not be very difficult. That said, the levels are varied enough that you will almost certainly get crunched or chopped a fair number of times. The control scheme can increase the difficulty if you get to anxious and start falling down all over the place.
Audio presentation:
The audio environment, sounds, voices, etc. are all very good. Sounds move very smoothly when you turn and sound muffled when behind you. The app is 120 MB in size, and the sounds make that size worth it. Many of the sounds, especially the death sounds can be quite graphic, and the horror theme is very well done.
Replayability:
This game has very little in the way of replayability. The items and enemies as far as I can tell are in the same position every game. However, some levels do have alternate endings.
Final thoughts:
This app, though expensive, was well worth the price. It is quite fun and the audio is the highest quality I’ve seen in an app on the I-devices. Despite its lack of replayability and unspectacular difficulty, the app is still a lot of fun and I will still be playing it a lot. As for accessibility, the app is completely accessible, and will even prompt you when to turn on and off VoiceOver.
Ratings:
I thought I’d put together some ratings, on a scale of one to five, with five being the best. Here it goes:
Audio: 5 – Superb presentation, highest quality sounds and voices
Controls: 5 – Though simple, the controls are perfect for the gameplay.
Story: 4 – Though simplistic, the storyline is well done and serves to link the separate levels together nicely.
Gameplay: 5 – The levels provide a lot of fun and interesting challenges,
And will keep all but an experienced audio gamer active for a while.
Difficulty: 3 – fore someone who has experience playing audio games, this game will not prove very difficult.
Replayability: 2 – other than a few alternate endings, the really isn’t much.
Total: 4

Very good review, and thanks for the info.

I'll post a link to this on the papasanga page in the database.

Btw, I thought the game was 6.99 usd? that does't seem expensive for an audiogame to me, ---- though I freely admit I don't know much about Iphone prices and if most other Iphone aps are on average less than this, fair enough.

I've been thinking of getting the Papa Sangre games, maybe after I get the next two chapters of Inquisitor.

But wait, what's that? A transport! Saved am I! Hark, over here! Hey nonny non, please help!

I'd recommend them Bryan, also their game The Nightjar. The gameplay is fairly symple, although it can get challenging, however what really makes them is the atmosphere, ambience and voice acting, heck they managed to get Tony Comberbach for the Nightjar and none other than Rifleman Boromir Stark himself, Sean Bean for Papasangre 2, ---- the creapy lady with the spanish accent in Papa 1  isn't bad either, especially with her advice and taunts when you die, though I don't know her name, her voice is just so gentle and disturbing, sort of like the nursery teacher from hell, ---- which actually she sort of is big_smile.

If you want to hear some actual gameplay there are several around, go and check the db for various links, though i'd recommend not hearing too much audio as surprises definitely count for these titles.

I've heard some of the Papa Sangre LP's. That's why I'm considerig getting them. I wonder how much they had to pay to get Sean Bean onboard though. LOL.

I'm curious for those who have played the game and completed it, are there multiple endings? if there are I think I got the bad one when I finished it, lol

I think Papa 2 has multiple ending and secrets, but I'm not sure I played through for a while and then got a bit stuck, though I suspect it would be easier now sinse the level I was slightly stuck on was partly because moving through the reeds was a bit laggy in previous versions which has now been fixed.

I need to sit down properly with all the games and play them exhaustively, rather than just the odd bit on a train.

Only question right now is are they compatible with the 4S or do you think I ought to wait till next year or whenever it is I upgrade my phone? The games are cheap enough that I could probably buy atleast one of them this month what with the fact that I'm no longer under a two-year contract for my cell service and that's going to save me a lot of money in the long run. ut I'mhesitant to buy the games now because I don't want to find out the don't work with IOS 8 or the 4S.

But wait, what's that? A transport! Saved am I! Hark, over here! Hey nonny non, please help!

2014-10-04 21:14:08

As to the 4S, well given the time the games were released at I'd be highly surprised if not and I've certainly not heard anything to the contrary, although I  can't confirm anything myself as I've only ever played them on my  Iphone 5.

As to Ios 8, well again,  I've not heard anything to the contrary and usually if  something doesn't work we will know, however I am not personally updating to Ios 8 until a few versions have come out and some bugs have been squashed.

I will probably get an Iphone 6 at some point in the future for some of the enhancements, but not immediately.

Well I took the plunge and bought Papa Sangre 1. So far best five bucks I've spent in a while. I'm on the level withthe Grinning Reaper and the flatulent old man who also seems to trip you. Needless to say I don't think I'll be rescuing him next time I try.

But wait, what's that? A transport! Saved am I! Hark, over here! Hey nonny non, please help!

Well to update I just beat Papa Sangre a little while ago. Creepy...

I would think the admins would have moved it.

But wait, what's that? A transport! Saved am I! Hark, over here! Hey nonny non, please help!

2014-10-06 14:42:30

I have already copied   Quasar's initial review and stuck it in the game articles room, sinse this topic already had some replies and discussion so needed to stay where it was, go to the articles room and you'll find it.

@Bryan, wow that was quick! I thought the old man was on the level with the slasher bird rather than the reaper, sinse that was the furthest I got, but it has been a while sinse I played the game and it has been through some new versions sinse.

I'd recommend if you like Papasangre getting somethinelse other games, Nightjar is basically the same but in space in a sort of Alien/Event horizon type of way with Tony Comberbach, and Pappa 2 has some extras from one including more of a story, use of hands to perform actions, game center achievements and of course Sean bean.

I'm looking forward to somethinelse Zombie  arena game sinse I'd be interested to see what they can do in an  more  action setting.

Oops, you're right. It is the Slasher Bird. I probably will get PS2 at some point and Nightjar as well.

2014-10-07 20:07:15

As I said that level with the old man, the slasher bird and the river was the furthest I got, though I wouldn't say I was stuck so much as never took the time to get around that level, I need to play the game again.

I did really like the sound of being killed by the slasher birds, that was fun! big_smile.

Yeah. Some of those deaths are quite brutal.

2014-10-08 19:32:35

I think the slasher birds are my favourite death thus far, just because your told in pretty precise  terms what they do, ---- and that's exactly what it sounds like, i love the nasty squish after all the screaming, really grusome in a commic and horrible way! big_smile.

That is a hog eating your body up. I will give you another. LOL. I always did think the girl guiding you through the game sounded rather cute.

Cute? She always struck me as super creepy, the way she is so calm about you meeting a gorey end, it's awsome!

Much as I love Sean Bean, I do slightly miss her in the second game, though thus far I've only played a couple of levels of Papa2 so it is entirely possible she appears again later.

@Dark, it's Benedict Cumberbatch ... not Tony.

Papa Sangre II's deaths are more creative. I should put my review of it in the articles room.

That is true Astro, don't know why I thought cumberbach's first name was Tony there, I admit I don't pay massive attention to celebrities even the ones who are good actors.

If you want to write a serious review for the articles room of Papa2 or anything else, feel free, that is just the sort of thing the room was made for.
