I wish

to apologise in advance for those not interested in web based games, but for

those who like games with a big community feel and like their science

fiction then this is for you.

Warring factions, mentioned on the Audyssey

magazine once. It's just had a reset so it's all new factions, and

everyone's on a level playing field. Since no one has a crushing advantage

over anyone else yet this is the perfect time to join.

I'm in the

Underground, and a proud member of the Academy empire. Empires are the

equivalent of clans in this game just to explain, and the Academy was

formerly in the Alliance but has reformed in the new Underground. The

Academy was set up as a learning empire, but since then we've had our fair

share of fights and have come out pretty well.

There have been no major

fights as yet, since everyone's too far apart to find each other yet. Even

later on though you should be safe in the home region, which larger players

guard fiercely from the other factions. Fighting within a faction is almost

non existent, except for extreme circumstances such as multi

accounts.

The Academy will welcome new members, but we're cautious

because of the afore mentioned multi accounts. This is where a player from

another faction creates a second account in another faction to gain

information on colony and fleet positions, as well as sending technology to

their original account. Very occasionally they create accounts to disrupt

the home system, but this is generally even worse form than spying and very

rare.

All you need is a screen reader that can handle HTML, and a web

browser that can handle the site. Users of Internet Explorer should do fine.

Whilst there has not been as huge strides in technology as when I joined a

month or two back there has been some advancement in the few days since

reset, so if you join an empire they might have some technology to give you.

The research is the best part, and now it's even better because your

blueprints might actually be used. A couple of months ago new players

couldn't produce anything on a level with the older players, and that

incarnation had lasted at least a couple of years.

The game is intended

to be persistent, the reset was to fix what the admins saw as balance

issues. That should hopefully be the last reset ever. If you prefer more

often resets there is always the deathmatch server, which resets under

certain conditions I believe and has a much more frantic pace. This is the

sort of thing you check in on rather than playing solidly, your colonies are

ticking over all the time whether you're logged in or

not.

A

nice change to the traditional dumb muds when you act some idiot from

medieival times, I heard of this game I might try it out. Don't you have to

buy a subscription or something?

Not any

more. Used to be a one week trial then you had to buy at leastone month's

access for $10 and free afterwards, now free with premium accounts. The

premium accounts are ad free, but the ads are at the bottom of the page

anyway so they don't interfere with screen readers at all.

No real wars

yet, we don't even know where the other factions are as yet... but give it

a week or two... You'll need the time to build up.

Oh, and contrary to

the site's description of the Underground faction we *do not* fight amongst

ourselves.

Glad to find some common ground with you Mike. I dabble with

muds, but my true love is sci fi and strategy games are always good.

Just

make sure you go into your settings and set the starmap to "text", this was

included to help screen reader users I believe. Not ideal, but the best that

can be implemented in a 3D universe.

Wait,

you're kidding. I can play for free? Yay!

And, if you guys would've

tried GWSE when it was up, you would've liked scifi muds. So yeah I'm

signing up to WF again!

2005-12-03 05:01:15

I'm

excused because I never even heard of GWSE. Maybe wasn't even a member here

then.

Join the underground if you want to be part of something big, just

don't join the outcast. They have negligible leadership, they're

technically a non faction. The outcast also start in the middle of the

galaxy, where worlds are a long way apart, and if another outcast attacks

you you don't have a specific safe homeworld and no faction leadership to

complain to.
