HI ALL,
AFTER 3 months finally my um, pacmate "omni" arrived.
I was verry excited since finally I will be able to have a smaller thing then my laptop to write on at my scool. plus I have the same sized braille display as at my home so I'm not loosing anything, I am just gaining mobility.
all went fine. I counted 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, and activated the rocker switch moving it to the left. smoothly, the switch bounced back to the center, my fingers were on the display. I knew what startup sound I would hear. the new omni sound, 2 or 3 ascending tones. I was aware what would come up. I was aware what software it was having. I was aware of its storage capasity. but...
I heard the drum like ascending sound, the startup of the pac mate 400 series. It was verry interesting. the unit started with that sound. no speech but the braille display was working. I got no soft key messages which was weird. further navigation confirmed my guessing. instead of the brand new omni, I got the older qx400 model. I am really worried of a need to hard reset the unit, you see. the pac mate was packed with a polish translation. if I will ever need to reset, I will need to go over through the need of reinstalling everything and re registering the translation since it's a third party software I would have to call altixand give them an ID to remove the trial limits, and to get my unit back in the original state. if it was the omni I wouldn't looze any bit, heh the language would be intact, since there was no full polish translation of windows mobile6. I would, still have the polish synth and a polish keyboard layout so typing polish carachters would be possible, and at the same time I wouldn't get some annyoing messages on windows live like, "użytkownik muwi: hi there!" which ment "user says: hi there!" so If I'd switch to eloquence that wouldn't sound fun.

all in all though I really like the device.

Strange. I would ask FS about this. Did you get it new or used? The about dialog wich can be found on the system page of the setting thing willl tell you what OS it's running. It sounds like you don't want it to be ce 4.2, because that will mean that is the ould qx instead of the omni. glad you enjoy it.

Well I will go check the version. I'd out it's used, since everything was packed normally, although I was amazed by the fact that it inmediately dropped me on the today screen and it didn't had to load jaws. and the battery was half filled about 57 percent. I still connected it to the charger and waited the 4 hours as stated in the manual.
the "version" page of the info dialog says "version 4.20 (created in 14053). copyright 1996-2003 Microsoft corporation. all rights reserved"
the memory is reported as 64 megs, but taking 32 for the OS leaves me with 32 which is the memory of the 400 model. I will definately contact my dealer about it.

hi all,
I want to give a few updates and at the same time ask a few questions.
first of all, the situation was explained, I was tolled that there were some issues. but My unit will be freely exchanged with the omni as soon as it's ready.
and I found my gig card, rofl I'm glad I didn't trashed it by accedent I thought before that it was supposed to secure the CF slot durring shipping. I got the hang of it, braille soft games installed, some music loaded, I'm verry happy with it.
and now a few questions.
1. I got a wireless cf card with it but when I insert it it asks me for a device driver name. I don't know what to type in there.
2. after I use programs and press alt tab, with the programs "closed" they are in the list, Are they still in memory loaded? or are they just there since I've used them?

O I forgotten, is there an alterrnative for the "windows mobile device center," it's a piece of ****, verry inaccessible. and it eats my memory, ram that is. I use vista. is there a way of installing active sync instead? and sorry for my prafanity.

<Insert passage from "The Book Of Chrome" here>

2009-02-08 01:32:36

The list of programs you get when pressing alt tab is a list of running programs. Control q is the same as alt f4 on the PC. As for the wireless card, you will have to install drivers for it. The Onmi is the only PM with preinstalled wireless drivers. Wich card did you get for it. I'm shure someone can help find drivers for it if need be. As for the activesynce, you can't get it for vista as far as I know.

yeah, i don't understand why i should have to pay 70 dollars for a wireless card. seriously, you can go buy PCI or USB wireless adapters for like 40 bucks, or less than that - more like 20. so why are thesse wireless cf cards so expensive? i use a pac mate, but for wireless i use this here netbook which is even smaller than that.

No, no laptops or netbooks, it didn't worked out well for me, both  at scool and at home, my lapotop is used like a desktop, just not for me that's why I ghot my pac mate. smile

I must admit it is a little ridiculous that you even need a CF card, mainstream PDAs and many phones even come with wireless connectivity built in as standard. Their expense is likely due to the limited demand for them, making them a "specialist" item. Not specialist as in for us lot, just a niche product.

o yes I must agree, even some of our pda's have one build in already, this would apply to the icon/braille plus, and to the braille sense, however, the braille sense does not have a querty option, and although the icon / braille plus doesn't have a querty option and, I would assume, is smaller then the pm, we can't get it in poland. and although
e.c.e
is coloborating with humanware, they're working closer with gw, so the braille note is unavailable. I forgotten about the pronto, mh, not too functional for my  needs, no web browser, it can't even use wireless networks, my nokia is more funcional then the pronto using it to connect to the web. did I mensioned also that gw micro limits their firmware language to the country it's soled in? unlike in jaws or hal, you can't just switch to a different voice, so I would have to talk with my friends on msn using a polish synth and although I practiced reading english with polish and vice versa, it's easier to use a synth designed for the specific language. so, that, does it. the pac mate was the best option and my change in plans was really short. after I saw the pac mate using my own hands and years, plus I was limited. e.c.e was asking us to wait more months while the time where we had to get all the factures to the place that was giving us half of the price was almost over, and here, at my local altix biuro / office, I got the facture in about 15 minutes, and I was able to eat at KFC by the time, lol it was good.

Yep, by the way, people are underestimating my netbook. The minute I tell them its a small small laptop they're like wow, it must be pretty crappy. I love this thing. Especially considering it doesn't have the crap microsoft calls windows vista installed on it, making 2 gb of ram virtually like 1 gbn on xp. This, by the way, can be upgraded to have 2 gb of ram, without killing the warranty! so can the hard drive.

Did I mention it costs about 320 dollars?

If I can round $500, then I might just pick myself up a netbvook just to play with. I know that they are cheeper, but I would like to get one with some of the upgrade. One of the things I'm wanting to find out, is what the battery life compares to that of the  PM, wich gets around 10 to 12 hours without the wireless and or bluetooth for me. I'm careying a soney vio running vista and I'm gitting 2 to 3 hours at best. Vista to XP is like a gray hound to a large limo

My Asus triple E 901 gives about 4 hours or so with wireless enabled. That said you get a lot more functionality, and can probably get a spare battery or two quite easily for a much lower price.

What's the keyboard like. Is it big enough forr those who are used to desktop keyboards. I'm guess I'm asking, is everything crowded together. Know where I can have a look at a few netbooks? I'm guess that if the PM is doing OK for me now and I already have a laptop I'm in no hurry. Now if that laptop would suddenly felled to work...

It is noticeably smaller than a desktop keyboard I admit. I find though I've adapted quite nicely, after being used to laptop keyboards as well.

I wouldn't recommend one as a primary computer though, they just aren't quite as good at keeping up. The flash drive based ones are a very viable alternative to notetakers though for portability. Just be sure to get one with the intel Atom processor, these give better battery life I gather.

Hmmm. I do have to admit that I don't use my laptop unless I really have a need too, wich means I use the desktop alot more. Maybe that's why I went with a BX over a QX. Although, I have found myself getting more use to the laptop. The thing that gets me is that the keys are alot flatter then the desktop. either they're down or they're not. As for the netbook replacing my PM, I don't know, because the times I need a notetaker always been thows times I needed to take notes without speech, wich means use of a braille display. I also don't want to carey around two units, but to tell you the truth, I'm doing just that when I cary my PM and laptop with me to class.

I quite strongly disagree. My netbook has replaced my hp laptop. You say its hard to keep up? How exactly? Its a powerhouse. My 900 ha gets about 5 hours with wireless on. The 904 ha has the six cell, though, so might get more.

Just don't go with the acer. People have had issues with it, and when I went to look at it it felt noticably worse built than the asus.
Asus isn't well known, but they make mid to high end motherboards, same with laptops that you can usually only buy online.
I bought my netbook at staples.

First Asus is actually quite well known.

Second, my netbook can't keep up with the rate I try to move around Windows and launch programs in the same way my full laptop or desktop can. This is even when set to super performance mode, which sets the processor to be overclocked as I understand it. They also lack enough storage space to be a primary computer, though this is easily solved with an USB hard drive at home if it weren't for the lack of general grunt. I've got the 1.6ghz atom model with 1gb ram, and it takes quite some time to bring up web browser and so on. Start up time is very good though, even better if you just put it on sleep mode.

Erm...I really don't mean to be offensive here, but I'll probably come across as such.
The asus netbooks are fast. They're just as powerful as any other laptop out there. Unless your running some quad core system, or have some duel core system with 4 gb ram, they perform just as quickly as any other computer. It doesn't matter if you use a computer with a 1.1 ghz processor or 1.6, but seriously, it does the exact same thing, at the exact same speed. I mean yeah, your quad core desktop - this actually is equal to a duel core - might beat it. BUt for what 99.99 percent of people do it works good and I know of lots of people that use these as they're primary computer, including me. Honestly, this little netbook packs more punch than a lot of modern laptops. Is it going to play the most modern mainstream game? of course not! It takes like 10 seconds for the browser to start. That's too long? I'm just confused.
So...your saying 160 gb isn't enough? For being on the go it most certainly is. Also, if its not enough, upgrade it. Its quite easy to do, and it doesn't void the warranty. Not to mention that the laptops that come out now might have 320 gb drives, but they come with that crap ms calls windows vista on them.
Need I mention that this netbook is like 320 bucks compared with 999 dollars for a regular one, which probably would perform the same anyway?

Something something something insert canine related comment here

2009-02-16 06:59:57

160GB? Good grief, you take the hard drive model over the flash SSD drive and you lose a lot of the ability to just drop it in a bag and go without worrying about damaging it. Sure the hardd rive models are better for some people, but not everyone.

As to performance, that is the biggest load of misconceptions I've heard in a long time. Clock rate isn't everything, two equally "fast" processors can have huge differences in performance. The Atom CPU will have far reduced cache, and is actually a single core using hyperthreadingt to imitate dual core. My netbook pales in comparison to my core 2 duo 1.6ghz laptop.

10 seconds to start a browser? Yes that's too slow for a main computer for me. That's 10 seconds where speech pauses and I hate speech pausing, I worry it might crash.

Edit:
Clarification from wikipedia -
[q]The Intel Atom is an in-order single-core processor with hyper-threading, for low power mobile PCs and low-price desktop PCs. [/q]
And
[q]Hyper-threading works by duplicating certain sections of the processor

2009-02-17 03:16:05 (edited by timberwolf1991 2009-02-17 03:25:51)

Yeah, that's what I meant.
I know of someone who has a core 2 duo as well with xp. Sure, the netbook, being a single core, got "thrashed" as he put it by the sony in some ways, but, heres the big thing, not in others. BUt, using an ssd, I can understand why your getting such poor performance. Those ssd's are crap - at least the ones asus put into they're netbooks. You can get much better performing ones for about the price of an 80 gb hard drive.

Hrm, and I can throw mine into a bag too and not worry about damaging the hard drive. Honestly I don't know where to start on this, since hard drives have been in laptops for years and hardly ever fail. hd's can take a beating - sure, with ssd's, you get maybe 5 percent less chance of losing data - then again, if you have a netbook, your not going to throw it around - I'm not directing this at you, but many people on forums touted that ssd was so much better because you can throw your computer. Honestly, who is going to throw a computer. But I digress...

I love this netbook. The hd can take a good thrashing - as they have in the past and will in the future. Sure, its not fool proof, but your not going to drop your netbook, or maybe you are - I can see where having that would sure come in handy, but I've used laptops in school for the last 4 years or so, have dropped a few by accident, but nothings really gone wrong.

I heard sandisc is coming out with a new 32 gb model of ssd. It would cost around the price of a new 60 gb hard drive - I might actually switch over, mainly to play around with. SSd's are quickly catching up to hd's. Its going to be awesome when we actually can get equal performance between ssd and hd. Actually some ssd's are starting to go a bit faster than main hd.

Honestly though, that's why your netbook is so slow right now. The ssd can read ok, but when it comes to writing data it would die (lag badly). I can't imagine using jaws with an ssd - at least, not the one they put in the netbook. And as far as I know on some models of the eee, you can't replace it. Its sautered right onto the motherboard. That's why opening a web browser takes so long. If it was getting too much input at once, it would seem like speech would crash.

Sorry for the misunderstanding earlier - I thought you were using a hard drive based netbook.

Edit:
I don't regret buying the netbook with the hd. But, once ssd's come out and are comporable, I'm going to be buying one of those. They're supposidly no heat at all, a bit better battery. Right now though, at least for most people who want performance, the hard drive is the only way to go. I think there's a 500 gb ssd for around 500 dollars that's way faster than this hard drive. Mind you, prices are dropping quickly. I imagine next year you'll be able to buy an ssd for the same price as a hard drive now.

Oh wait, one more thing. Misconception? How do you figure that. The atom performs just as well as any duo core in most ways, if you have the hard drive model. Comparing a netbook with an ssd to a hard drive - equipt laptop is rediculous, at least the ssd they put in these netbooks. They used it to save money, and obviously it also performs worse than a comporable hd.

Okay, lets explain this. Press control alt delete, and the task managewr will appear. At the bottom you should get usage statistics, if not turn on details under view and do a refresh. The commit charge is memory usage, it includes virtual memory so ignore anything beyond what you know you have. I found my netbook CPU usage is far higher than my laptop with an equal clock speed, and still using well below a gig of ram for both. This is while idle with little other than the basic utilities and Jaws running on the netbook, even having MSN and spampal in the background on my laptop doesn't turn this around.

As to SSDs, they actually are faster in some ways. They don't have any seek time. My netbook actually starts way faster, and to throwing it around... well I would be happy putting my netbook in a normal backpack in its slip case. I wouldn't be comfortable doing so with my normal laptop. This means I can leave my big laptop backpack behind without having to worry about it being damaged. This might be a touch of paranoia, but they do make big padded laptop cases for a reason.

Back to processors though, as I said equal clock speeds mean little. Years ago a 2GHz Athlon was reported as being equal to a 2.4GHz pentium 4. Intel have for years sold Celerons as their budget processor line, often having similar clock speeds to their high end pentium lines. No way on earth could a Celeron of the same generation and clock speed match a pentium 3 in performance. There are just a lot of elements in play in processor design. This is why there was so much rivalry between Intel and AMD, both were trying to eek out more performance for a comparable clock speed to prove they had the better design.

hi all,
hmm this thred is getting interesting. well I don't drop big tech things like laptops or notetakers, well, except my old kajetek (A notetaker specific to poland) that was an ainchent one, from the 90's, however, unlike the freedom scientific's braille lite for instance, it's still popular, ba, the firmware is constantly updated, recently it gained some more navigatable menus, instead of the kind of "press n to create a new file, press s to open settings, press k to delete" thingy, you can press p cord and get a programs menu like in windows.
I still have it but I put it aside.
back to the pac mate, ccoolness, I've learned that the card was a "socket Go wi-fi! p500"  there even was a web address on the card, then the links said by them selves, and I had the drivers and their "companian" software, which I installed since it didn't seem to pop any dialogs up after I inserted the card even no "enter driver name" field.
well the program turned out to be slowing down my PM, and it wasn't that accessible either. it was usable but not accessible. right after I removed it, bang! "found new network, "home" what do you want to do?" I said "connect"  but my security blocked it. my wireless network relies on a list of mac addresses of all the laptops in our familly. these are only allowed through. temporarly I turned that off, and using the network card button in the advanced connections page, connected. it all works smoothly but I won't leave it open like that. how can I get the mac address of my wireless card?
except that all is working fine the only incofortable thing is one of the keys, the letter s to be specific, looks like something got to it and at first it's kinda heavy to press and then all is fine, if I leave it unused (Idle) for some time a few minutes it'll have these few presses heavy again.

LOL. That other notetaker sounds like it would be close to the braille lite M20 and M40, but better. weight, you done compared it. the closest we can come to that notetaker in the US that you brought up, is the braill-note. As for the sticking key, I don't know, but I might would ask FS about that.

Eh...it mayhave no seek times, but write-read times on the ssd (on the asus and acer models) isn't too great.
Anyway, I like both brands of processor. My hp, which has never failed me (bought in august of 2006, 2.0 tourion processor, 1 gb of ram), only formatted once. And yeah, I'll admit, it performs slightly better than my netbook. However, due to hyper threading, my netbook can convert files in gold wave with no lag at all. I can't say that for this hp.
Mind you, my main custom built computer beats both of these down so easily its not even funny.
But I love my netbook. Its the only thing I'll ever buy again due to size, portability, and speed. This doesn't apply to booting/opening of programs, but this netbook converted files a bit slower than the hp in gold wave, but with no noticable lag. If you hate lag while converting files, you'd hate this hp. Mind you, this hp can hold its own in most things, and actually I find myself still using as my main computer. But I don't find my netbook lags any more than this hp does. Actually, let me correct that. In a youtube video, have fun navigating! With this hp, I don't lag at all. I'll atribute that to intel's inferior GMA graphics drivers, maybe.

People say AMD's get too hot. Really? My main computer, stock fans (power supply and stock heatsync and CPU fan) avrages 29 c at idle, 35 c under heavy load.
I managed to lag my main system by incoding and burning a dvd. But even then, it still managed to be usable.

Oh yeah! Celleron, so I heard, is just a dummed down version of the pentium, which is why I avoid them. That's like Duron and Athlon.
I own one of each. THe 1.3 ghz duron can't hold a candle to the 1.1 ghz athlon, mind you the athlon has 512 mb of ram - but still. Also, the duron uses SD ram, where as the athlon uses DDr ram.
Right now, all these computers are working fine. My duel core athlon though, is my ftp / http server, and my hp is what I usually use as my main computer (skype, msn, etc).
By the way, what are you using in power settings of control pannel / super hybrid engine? That makes a huge difference. I'll admit that when the processor clocks down to 798 mhz, things seem to lag a bit. Power saving mode combined with max battery is, quite frankly, torture, and I don't recommend anyone try it. However, using speedswitch xp and setting it to dynamic switching while on battery, and setting the super hybrid engine to auto fixed the problem for me.

The netbook boots so fast - I think there's a thing in the bios called boot booster where it bypasses the splash screen of windows. I wish all computers had that feature.

How long do you average on battery? I get around 4.5 - 5 hours. If wireless is off, (I had skype and windows live on but disconnected), I was sitting at 5 hours and 30 minutes.

I love meranda though. Bearly uses up CPU power / ram at all, even on max battery.
