Hi. I’m looking to download a torrent,  it is a magnet link.  Apparently I will need a client, I have been looking at free download manager as I want something simple to download the torrent and others in the future.   I’m using Firefox as my browser, but I have heard the latest version of free download manager is not accessible?  Could anyone explain the procedure in order to download the torrent

Hi,

I'm an expert at downloading torrents. But I don't recommend downloading some of them, because  the files could be damaged. I did it the hard way, I was downloading a sound library for music to use, and when I tried to install it, it said the file was damaged, something was wrong with the file or something inside of the install app.

But, I use Youtorrent. Try that out. I still use torrents once in a while, but after the files being damaged, I don't think I will use them again, just for certain things I want to get for free.

the reason thee files were damaged is entirely the fault of the dubious uploader, and not the bittorrent protocol.

use Utorrent although the U in U torrent is the micro symbol but also utorrent works.

Okay thanks for the replies, I’ll use the utorrent application to download it.

If you use uTorrent, I've found versions later than 3.1 aren't as accessible, so you might want to find 3.1 on an old versions website.

@flackers thanks, is this the right thing on the right version?

That's the exact version I'm using. . I didn't get mine from an old versions site, I just held on to it when it got updated to a not-so-accessible version, but it's the right version number.

Okay great, I’ll give that version a try

@flackers, or anyone who might know, i tried downloading Utorrent using the link shown above. Every time I launch this i get a message saying "this app has been blocked for your protection, please contact the admin". I am the admin on this account, i have tried running the app as admin, turning off windows defender and turning UAC off all with no luck. is there any way to get this installed?

It's the right installer because I just downloaded it and installed it after uninstalling my version. It runs okay for me, but I'm on Win 7 with UAC turned off and Microsoft MSE as antivirus. This sounds like a blanket blocking of file-sharing apps to me. More Win 10 not letting its users take responsibility for their own machines. Other than letting you know it's the correct installer, I can't really help because I'm not having the same trouble on the same system. Maybe someone else knows how to stop Win 10 from babysitting its users in this annoying way.

Looks like more Windows 10 crap, for now I’m using free download manager version five although it’s not nearly as accessible

hi,
Run the file through command prompt and that should bypass the protection warning.

Yep, as the prior post says, I just tried to run it on my spare win 10 pc, and got the same UAC message. Running command prompt as administrator and typing in the path and filename of the utorrent.exe file bypassed the UAC message and it installed and runs okay. Win 10's so-called security seems pretty heavy-handed.

What about going to the file's properties and checking the unlock or unblock checkbox? I forget if it's unlock or unblock. Lol.

2018-08-09 21:22:03

I looked for the unblock checkbox in the properties dialog before trying the command prompt but couldn't find it.

2018-08-09 21:26:58

Yeah, unfortunately I tried unblock before and it didn’t work, it does work running through the command prompt though

2018-08-09 22:15:46

It's not Windows 10's heavy handedness, it's Microsoft's, sounds like the DOJ needs to slap them around some more.

try settings>apps>apps and features, set it to install apps from anywhere.

All that said,
I would highly recommend against using Utorrent. There are better clients out there, and UTorrent has a really bad rep at this point. what with major adds, bitcoin mining and god knows what other addware and such crap.
I use Qtorrent myself, and have used bitcommet in the past as well.
P.S. be careful with bitcommet while installing though, make sure you uncheck all those boxes for installing google crome and other stuff.

Don't know about later versions, but 3.1 doesn't have any ads I've noticed while using a screen  reader. And I'm sure it doesn't install adware. It doesn't even ask to install any pointless toolbars or anything like that. I seem to remember later versions installing something called web companion, but the old versions are fine. The reason I use uTorrent 3.1 is because every aspect is completely accessible out-of-the-box, and it downloads torrents.

Here is an accessible version of free download manager https://www.dropbox.com/s/ib0jdza9j7n5m … t.exe?dl=0

That seems to be a problem with a lot of freeware these days, they go from just delivering the software to being a delivery platform for every kind of crapware out there.

Not to mention that a lot of software in general go from being fully accessible to being totally inaccessible as well.

Praise your favorite deity for sites like oldversions.com!

@grryfindore

You might want to check out Unchecky, it's a small install and forget Windows service that can uncheck all those unwanted offers for you, handy when those check boxes aren't very accessible.

Thanks for the version of FDM, before I was just using version five but I had to use OCR to even see what was going on

I didn't know QTorrent was accessible, I may have to have a look at it.

I was using Pico Torrent for awhile, but an update completely broke accessibility. I was extremely pissed off about that.
