hello,
I found this soundfont based on the pc98. for those who don't know what that is (which should be all of you except for maybe ukio and morakooma), the pc-98 was a very popular laptop computer in japan. comprable in performence to it's desctop brother the pc-88, it was just as popular as the c64 was in the US and zx spectrum in the UK.
While early moddels of the pc98 were no more capable than early IBM Pcs in the sound department, pc98 systems manufactured from 1984 onwards used either the ym2203 or ym2608 fm chip. the only difference between the 2 is that the ym2608 has native stereo sound while the ym2203 is mono.
this soundfont uses samples recorded from the ym2608.

Quite an interesting soundfont this is. By any chance, did you ever get a sample of the actual PC98? Often whenever someone samples FM chips and such, you will get glitches because the person who sampled it didn't sample every pitch it could go to.

to be fair, he did sample a greater range compared to genesi sf, which doesn't get any higher than c5 I think.

Do you mean that the note stops playing after c5? Because I've seen that.

This one in particular seems to go to almost c9 or so, which is unusual for an 8bit soundfont. And I've noticed that there's a slightly incomplete implementation of a room kit.

Not a bad font.

Wow, I never thought I'd run into anything like this.
This SoundFont was made by Kakuzatoo. Interesting, however...

yes. I actually downloaded it from his link. the link I posted is my own mirror, since the original was media fire which has adds that could slow down low end computers.

Hmm, I understand.

@ammericandad2005 Believe it or not, the samples that were used to make this SoundFont was not of a YM2608. They were samples that Kakuzatoo recorded using VOPM with HertzDevil's Touhou instrument bank.

btw, using sf2comp I Mannaged to replace some of the drum samples with ones recorded from the pc98's standard midi driver.

I would add the SSG percussion and OPNA percussion, because I can get the samples without problems using the PMD98.

I do not think the PC-98 has a MIDI driver, but what it does have is MIDI support for some games. Many people used (and are using) the Roland Sound Canvas SC-88 and the SC-88Pro with the PC-98.

the pc98's midi driver was part of a special version of windows95. unfortunately little is known about it since it came out very late in the system's life. by the time it came out japanese computer manufacturers finally defected to ms-dos.

I honestly prefer the NEC's PC-x800 computers before NEC worked with Microsoft to create a version of Windows 95 that was compatible with the PC-98.

And if you're interested, I're making a SoundFont of Touhou 1 (Higly Responsive to Prayers) with Mdrv2 instruments (not PMD instruments)

I do not know, but there is a problem, and this SoundFont is not GM. I have 10 presets done.

Please, please reupload this.

Take care, it's a desert out there.

Well, I don't use any PC-98 SoundFont anymore, not even the one that I made 2 years ago, and the last update was a year ago...
If you still are looking for kakuzatoo's SoundFont, download it from Gross's website.
