Hello all,
I recently purchased a product key for Windows7 ultimate, to update my windows7 home premium using windows anytime upgrade.
The code worked, but after clicking on "update", it appears that I got stuck at the dialog "Starting upgrade". It just sits there already for half an hour, and it seems like nothing really happened. It still gives me the dialog "starting upgrade". Is it normal and should I just wait until something happens, or is there something going wrong and is there a way to fix it?

Thanks in advance.

Hmmm I am unsure if the win7 update upgrader works still at least here in nz you can't even buy them.

Tab around to see if you can find a progress bar. The upgrader might have to download 2 or 3 giggabytes of data before the actual upgrade begins.

In Germany a lot of shops, including Microsoft themselves, are still selling product keys.
Ah, it just gave me an error, the upgrade failed.
Maybe there are some log files explaining what went wrong...

You can download Windows 7 ultimate from PC river.net and enter that product key during installation.

That's exactly where the link in the product key e-mail directed me to. The download worked fine, however, I'm not able to run the setup.exe, it keeps giving me an error that a certain dll-file doesn't work with Windows or there is a mistake in it.

Okay, after redownloading, it worked.
However, I couldn't upgrade my windows version using an English installer.
However, after we finally found a German installer, that one says I should use Windows Anytime Update, which, after fiddling around a bit for quite a while, still doesn't work!
I however found the possible reason why it won't work: Probably ServicePack1 is not properly installed or cannot be installed, due to reasons I still don't really get.
I tried several fixes with the command prompt, at last I tried installing a hotfix from Microsoft which was supposed to get rid of the issue.
Still nothing. Windows Anytime Upgrade still gives me the error message after an hour, and upgrading with the windows7 ultimate ISO does not work, because they throw me out, asking me to use the anytime upgrade thingy. mad
I am completely out of ideas. Does anybody here perhaps know a fix I don't know of? Or is there a way to make the upgrade with the DVD work?

Thanks in advance.

Why don't you format it and start everything from scratch? That would permanently disappear that issue.
Are you serious that when you click install or run from media in the DVD windows setup, and then click upgrade this computer or something like that, windows displays that issue?
Try clicking open in the DVD drive and then find the setup.exe. Press enter on it and perhaps it may work. I'm not sure it will, though.

If you haven't tried it already, this might work for you.

Non-destructive reinstall of Windows 7

Just choose Ultimate instead of Home Premium when asked.

Hello Figment,
Thank you very much for your tip with the inplace-upgrade, which eventually did the trick! I was able to do a repair installation of my current Windows 7 home premium version with an ISO-image, and afterwards, the anytime upgrade worked.
However, at the beginning, I didn't realise that I had Windows 7 Ultimate on my laptop already. The windows anytime upgrade somehow got stuck when searching for updates, so I rebooted my machine. After that, the anytime upgrade option disappeared. It took me some time to realise what must have happened, WAU must have upgraded my computer when I rebooted, and I couldn't realise. Anyway, now that this is done, I am just more than happy! big_smile
@Afrim, I must admit that I don't really like the idea starting completely from scratch again, as long as there is another workaround that doesn't require a complete harddrive wipe.

Hi.
Well paddy, even though you dn't like starting from scratch, when you install a new windows version and you haven't cleaned your computer for quite some time, it's quite the good idea to wipe the whole machine clear and start off fresh witha  clean harddrive, so you can rethink what you still need and install the things you need, a ver'y handy thing to do.

Hail the unholy church of Satan, go share it's greatness.

True that, but the inplace-upgrade for me also fixed more than the Problem I had when trying to upgrade Windows. Before the repair Installation, something was constantly eating up all my harddrive's space, no matter what I did to prevent it by for example deleting a lot of unnecessary Software and files. It did give me some space in first place again, but a couple of days or weeks later, the space was gone.
After the inplace-upgrade, I was very surprised where the 40 free Gigabytes came from. And now, my Laptop is a bit faster, so I am more than Content with the result.

If you have upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate, it's worth the upgrade, and it's even worth not upgrading to Windows 10. smile

Now that we cannot upgrade to Windows10 for free anymore, upgrading to Windows10 is currently out of the question for me anyway.
When I should get myself a new Computer/Laptop, then I might consider having Windows10 running on it.
