Hello,
So I have dvds from about 8 different countries, but unfortunately I'm being tripped up by region coding.  My old drive, it turns out, was what is known as "region free", meaning it can play dvds from all regions.  However, I have a new drive, a MATSHITA BD-MLT UJ-220S USB external drive, which doesn't have that functionality.  I was wondering if someone could help me get it so I can watch all my movies again?  I have looked into the program called any dvd, but it has 2 problems (1) it only works on windows and (2) it's really expensive.  thanks

Harrylst, actually all drives can play any DVD with any region code if you no how to modify the firmware for the drive. In the USA, for example, the drives are set to region 1 by the manufacturer. In order for someone like me to play a DVD from the UK or Australia I have to download a utility for my drive and set the region code to 0 which will disable the region code checking. So what I would do in your case is google how to change the region code to 0 for your drive. I'm sure someone out there has a crack or utility to do that. You just need to find out how to do it for your make and model of drive.

Sincerely,

I've tried. I'm getting a lot of model numbers that aren't mine. I really don't understand what the pages are saying anyway.

@harrylst: vobcopy and libdcss. If you intend to archive the DVDs, simply brute-force-decrypt the disc data. If you intend to play your discs without ripping them first, then @tward's suggestion is best--go find a region-unlock firmware for your drive, and patch it. Trust me there are lots of real-world benefits to doing this, including ripping faster (if the drive uses ripguard, as many now do, of course *sigh*).

I'm planning to rip the DVDs using handbreak on a mac. Can vobcopy or whatever that is help me? if so how?

I'd love to reflash my drive, but just can't figure out how. I've gone through about 5 pages of results and all for different models.

@harrylst: Certainly, there is even a necflash binary for OS X that can send the ATAPI commands. I have patched my iMac's internal Sony DVD drive firmware to remove ripguard and it works.

You need the patched firmware for your drive first. Try to find it in The Firmware Database.

Normally you need a tool that performs the flashing and a binary file with the firmware's contents. Normally if you just Google "ModelName firmware" you would find it. If not, I'll see what I can find if you provide the exact model string.

Hi.
Interesting topic. I have never bought dvd's outside my country to avoid those issues, but I would gladly buy dvd's from the UK with audio description if I can flash my drive. Thank you all for the information. big_smile

Best regards SLJ.

The string is MATSHITA BD-MLT UJ-220S USB.  That is the model of drive I have.  Thanks for your help.
SLJ, I seem to remember you're in Europe, so you can watch UK dvds because it's all region 2.

This topic pertains to your drive, by the looks of it. However, I think you're out of luck. They have working firmware update, but it's OEM-supplied so it's not trivial to do without messing about with a debugger. And, it appears they have not achieved RPC-free.

I think you may want to get yourself a cheap DVD-R/RW drive that is supported. Sorry to bring bad news.
