Hi guys.
I recently needed to use an OCR software for reading some books.
So I decided to go for Kurzweil1000 since it's made primarily for blind people.
First off, If you've got any suggestions or tips and so on regarding OCR softwares and anything related, I'd be thankful if you'd share it with me.
Secondly, As I said I installed Kurzweil1000 but it seems like it has an internal screen reader.
How to disable that screen reader thingy?
I know I know it's got fancy voices and such but I'd prefer navigating around with my old pal "NVDA + ESpeak" big_smile and if possible, read the text with it as well.
Also is it possible somehow not to install the three VW Voices with Kurzweil.
I know that I would always install them anyways but for the sake of curiosity smile

Hello,
To me, Kurzweil 1000 is one of the best learning tools ever made for blind and visually impaired people. What I dislike about it is that it converts some file formats such as docs or PDF instead of reading and editing them.
In terms of OCR accuracy, I have a mixed feeling about it; sometimes it does a really good job; other times it ruins everything. I compare it to ABBYY Fine reader, which is my primary application for scanning and converting text to digital formats. I've had the chance to try all the OCR applications which specialise in scanning and converting text to digital formats from ABBYY Fine reader, to Kurzweil 1000, Openbook, Nuance Omnipage, Read Iris, and none is as reliable as ABBYY Fine reader. It supports a great number of languages with dictionaries and thesauruses which contribute to the overall recognition results. That's what I'd recommend to anyone who needs to convert books and documents to digital formats.
Getting back to Kurzweil, What I like about it is that it has a very unique reading pattern. Kurzweil will indicate when you have reached a new chapter as the reading pauses will change from when you are reading consecutive lines of text. It will also create a different pause when you begin reading a new paragraph, as well as when you finish a page and jump to the other. All these indications, of course, will be given when you read continuously.
Anyway, to disable built-in speech in Kurzweil 1000, you go to settings> configuration and navigate with tab until you hear "Active speech is enabled". Change it to "disabled" with the arrow keys and click ok. Don't forget to save the settings in default before closing the program.
Hope this helps.
Cheers!

At Afrim, what kind of scanner do you use? I wanted to scan a rather large book I have, and was wondering what kind of scanner typically gave the best results. Thanks.

@afrim
Thanks so much for your reply!
If you'd help me with the following questions I'd be grateful again:
1. Is there some kind of tutorial for Kurzweil1000?
'cause I get confused and don't know how to use it.
2. As I disabled that Active Speech the built-in speech disabled but it won't read the text with the F5 key.
3. NVDA doesn't work in the editbox as it's supposed to.
I can't read with the arrow keys.
In other words, is it possible to read with our own screen reader?
4. In the recognition settings it seems it's using fine reader engine 11 so what is the difference between fine reader and Kurzweil1000?
5. If it's using that engine does that mean we could use all of the languages in fine reader here also?
6. Speaking of ABBYY Fine Reader: Could you please give a few tips to get started with that?
I've heard there are some languages as addons.
How to install those?
I've got both ReadIRIS and ABBYY Fine Reader also. So any tip would be apprecieated.
Really really sorry if I asked so much.

@Arqmeister, I use an Opticbook 3900 flatbed scanner made by Plustek. Plustek produces very good book scanners as they have a special edge design. The panel of the scanner, including the edge where you lay your book is completely flat. This helps for a better placement of the page and eliminates the shadow typically created by normal flatbed scanners. I would recommend you buy a better model if you have the possibility.

@Black and White,
1.    Yes, there is a tutorial as well as a quick reference found on the help menu of Kurzweil 1000. Just press enter on it and you will have the ability to read the tutorial with Kurzweil.
2.    Kurzweil 1000 won’t read anything because you have disabled active speech. You may want to keep active speech only for reading which you can find on the configurations menu. I would advise you to quit NVDA and get used to the way Kurzweil operates in terms of screen reading.
3.    I just tried it and NVDA seems to not work when you want to read the text or document you have opened. Sadly, it can read only the menu. That’s why I told ou to get accustomed to how Kurzweil works.
4.    The Fine Reader engine is what is used by Kurzweil 1000 to recognise; Kurzweil 1000 itself is not an engine. You may select to have as many languages as possible to be recognised by Fine reader. You also have Nuance Engine there.
5.    Question five was already answered above.
6.    To learn ABBYY Fine reader, you need to understand what all the buttons do. Some buttons you click are self-explanatory and they will help you complete the tasks it can perform. For instance, you may find while navigating with tab “Scan to PDF” and it tells you that this button will scan a document and convert it to a PDF editable document afterwards. I can’t think of any tips to start from. You may explore for yourself and learn the program.

Hope this helps.

Sorry for bumping this topic up but I've got another question which I'd be very grateful if someone help me.
Today I opened a secured pdf with kurzweil1000 which needed a password to be opened.
I pressed "Cancel" button and it tried to convert the pdf to image using Adobe Acrobat Reader which I have installed and Convert it to text.
The question is: Could I do that with non-secure pdfs?
I mean forcing kurzweil1000 to convert it to images first and then convert it?
Because the resulting text was slightly better.

The thing I love aboiut kurzweil 1000 is the built in wikipedia browser  and dictionaries. I know you could just use the web but I hate wikipedia in a web browser because of all the clutter.

Power is not the responsibility of freedom, but it is actually the responsibility of being responsible, it's self, because someone who is irresponsible is enslaved by their own weaknesses.

Hello Black and White,
There is an option to preserve images when converting a PDF file to a text, but I don't know how much would that help.
