When you get a carrier you have special abilities to launch fighters, launch bombers and refule them, but these work basically like extra battle abilities. Your fleet is something else, and you can have a fleet whilst in a battle ship.
When you have a fleet your on a screen with your fleet and the enemy fleet. You can hit blips like the scanner screen to either a friendly ship on your side and an enemy ship, or the enemy carrier or star base, then, either have the friendly ship you've selected fight the enemy or fight the enemy yourself.
its pretty cool, even if your friendly ships are fairly crappy and only really of use either to get you out of some battles or soften up an enemy before you have to fight them, plus of course, the more your winning the battle in the system, ie, the more combat missions you do, the smaller the enemy fleet you face.
Hmm, all of this is making me want to stick the s5 games back on this pc and give them another spin.
With our dreaming and singing, Ceaseless and sorrowless we! The glory about us clinging Of the glorious futures we see,
Our souls with high music ringing; O men! It must ever be
That we dwell in our dreaming and singing, A little apart from ye. (Arthur O'Shaughnessy 1873.)
