Hi guys

My apologies for another topic or if this has been previously discussed.

I was just wondering what the current process of appointing mods was and who is accountable for doing so?

Furthermore, who are the current mods and how/when/why were they appointed?

Also just throwing an idea out there, should the forum members elect mods via a public vote rather than it being a more internal process?

On a public free forum it does seam a little odd (and un-democratic) to me that mods aren't chosen by the members.

This would give the members of the forum a lot more say on how they believe it should be run, as well as make the mods a lot more accountable for there actions.

It wouldn't be a tough thing to do, open a simple poll for a set time and done.

Really interested to see your responses.

I lobbied so hard for a voting system, when I was moderator on another forum.
I thought that a democratic vote would work on a forum just like it works in a country.
I am against it now, and I'll explain why.
While we would like to think that voting would be done in the best interest of the community, it can often take on a very cliquish vibe when many of the members of a community know one another, or feel that they do.
Another result is that if a mod needed to be appointed and there was some tense and stressful situation like the one we just had, it's possible that members could begin pressuring others to vote a certain way.
If the community wants to vote democratically, I have no problem with that.
But I did want to raise these points, because I've seen it from both sides, and lobbied hard for the other side at one time.

I'm personally in agreement with Mirage on this one. I'm okay with people recommending mods, or even coming to us to talk about being a mod, but it should never, ever be a popularity contest, not when cliques can form and tempers can turn logic completely on its ear.

I must respectfully disagree with posts 2 and 4, and here's why. when looking for admins, people more often than not, try to get in their friends through the backdoor method. either that, or someone that they know. at any rate, it's almost never a total outsider, unless, as I've said, they have connections. then, if we don't like the choice of admins, and we try to raise concerns, they then try to please us. if we vote, and we don't like the outcome, the only person to blame is ourselves. PS. I've seen the backdoor method too much myself.

Appointing mods through a voting system, as much as we may like to think may work out in the long run, its a really really bad idea.
I put up bob, to be the moderator. Bob has his friends vote for him, he has his friends create accounts just to vote for him as well, where in what counts is friendship and not the suitability of that person for being a moderator. Look at almost any political system in any democratic country and that should tell you why its a bad idea. no matter who is chosen, the trump supporters will hate against abama guys, and the abama guys and anyone sain will hate against trump and everything he does. sorry, but I hope you get what I am getting at or my analogy and are not too deeply offended if you are pro trump? wink

I would love to see a hybrid system.
the admins discuss amongst themselves and go. Who do we think would do a good job. They nominate Franky. Then they post a topic on the boards.
Hey everyone. We would like to bring Franky on board. How do you feel?
Now Franky might have one or two people that don't like him, but the concensus goes. Heck yeah. Franky's got a level head and knows how to defuse arguments, then he might be a good choice.
But just selecting and then putting someone in an admin position only further hurts the perception the community has of it's mods.

I see both sides of this. On one hand, the fact that it could very well become a popularity contest is a real and valid concern. of course, especially in a stressful time such as this, a good portion of the users who would vote would want to try to make a decision that would benefit the forum as a whole, but there would be people who would only vote for their friends, or vote against someone who they had a personal beef with, but would otherwise make a good mod. There's also the problem that anyone can make anything sound great via a wall of text. Writing can often be more persuasive, but also falsely so, because you wouldn't get the kind of vocal tics or uncertainties you'd get if someone were actually making a speech. For that reason, I believe that, if such a system were to come into play, one of the strict requirements would be that each candidate would have to submit their pitch, for lack of a better term, in audio, no exceptions. Anyone can be smooth in writing; it's harder to hide any less than stellar motivations when people can actually hear your voice. It can definitely be done, don't get me wrong. There are people out there who use their considerable charisma to take advantage of anyone or anything they can. It's just not quite as easy for the average person to do.

The glass is neither half empty nor half full. It's just holding half the amount it can potentially hold.

lol I would be happy to make staff pitches verbally if I had to.

The hybrid idea is neat. So it wouldn't be a vote, per se, but sort of "if you have a serious problem, speak now or forever hold your peace" sort of deal. I like that.
