Hi.
I am curious, how much bloatware comes with the original windows on the system and would a clean install be a definite must or is the normal and activated windows good enough to start working with the device?

Greetings Moritz.

@simba To be honest with you, I have no idea, most of us who bought the Win2 and on the gpdwin subreddit just reinstall windows to be safe. You never know. I do that with every new computer I get. I'm sure it'll work just fine though. If you're paranoid like me, just run malwarebytes on it, just to make sure. It does come from China, afterall. Not to throw dirt on GPD, they're established and well respected, but the things they have going on with their government and labor conditions is far from good.

I agree concerning reinstalling Windows from scratch. I do this with every new computer I get and when a new version of the operating system is released. I just performed a clean install of the October 2018 Windows 10 update on my Win and it fixed several problems I was having with the device.

Before you perform a clean install, make sure you get your product key with Magical Jellybean Keyfinder. The Win may not activate the first time you reinstall Windows. You will also need the drivers. I linked to them somewhere on the last page, but here is the link again. https://www.gpd.hk/gpdwin2firmware. You will then need to boot from your USB drive and make sure you have a USB headset or sound card connected. I recommend a USB hub for this purpose.

Speaking of booting from USB, how do you guys do this? I currently have to ask for sighted help to click on the USB drive after booting into Windows advanced options from the recovery page of settings\update&Security. I hope Microsoft will add Narrator to this screen. If you guys haven't checked this out, please do so and vote it up so Microsoft hopefully pays more attention. This is yet another really important Narrator improvement that needs to happen ASAP! https://microsoftaccessibility.uservoic … nced-start

You have the win1 or 2? I didn't need a headset when installing windows. Justbooted to my win PE and installed that way.

My friend just got the Win and I'm trying to help him set it up. It appears it's set to Chinese. Why the retards set it up with Chinese as the default language is beyond me. Anyway, how do we set the language to English? Narrator is speaking Chinese and we cannot choose English from the list. It keeps saying something went wrong. Any tips?

I hope that doesn't happen when I get mine...

Hello NevEd. How did you get the talking PE to boot on the win 2? I have been curious about that. Can you just hit f12 and choose the usb stick? Thank you.

Re: windows 10 being activated out of the box.
on my win 2 it was already activated.
Re: windows 10 being in and speaking Chinese did you order it from a Chinese seller? I ordered mine from droid box USA just to be safe.
Sometimes uefi machines can be very stupid about themselves booting from USB. Some of them would not boot from USB unless you changed something in the bios.

You shouldn't need a talking PE. the Windows 10 installation media has Narrator support. I would like to know how you boot from USB other than using the inaccessible advanced startup options menu.

@Chris I only did that because I had an enterprise version of windows without all the crapware. The way I did it was spamming the del key on startup, which took me to the bios, had my brother select usb for me and that was that.  I really wish moterboard manufacturers could start implementing some form of standard accessibility in their mobos, like keep a standard interface on all different mobo types and brands to make things either, because some motherboards have different functions than others.. Make a common key to enable the screen reader. Idk.

I ordered mine off of New Egg. Do you think it will come up talking in Chinese? Also do you think it will be loaded with bloat ware? I have my little flash drive  and a ninite setup as well as an auto run for the other installers that ninite doesn't have like gold wave and reaper ready...

@techmaster20 There wasn't really any bloatware on the part of GPD, I'm more so talking about the infestation that is vanilla windows 10.. lol. That's bloatware in and of itself, without all the added manufacturer crap. As for it speaking a different language, I didn't have that problem, so I have no idea. Also, if you get a charger that has a converter adapter to convert it to a U.S. plug (that's assuming you live in the U.S.), get this charger instead.

Might want to get another USB C cable as well, the one that came in the box was a little short. Just make sure it's type c to type c, meaning both plugs on both ends. The the end that plugs into the win will be the same on the other end. For best performance make sure it's a power delivery cable as well.

@techmaster20 Compared to the charger that I personally received (i'm not sure what chargers are shipped out with newer units), it was able to charge at a higher voltage than the stock charger could. The win2 can handle up to 15v charging. I also purchased it because the UK seller I got it from gave me a UK charger with a U.S. adapter that didn't always work, it had to be plugged in at just the rite position to charge.

We managed to get the GPD Win set to English and he loves it! I do have a question about mine and the charging cable. My original Win with the Atom CPU came with a USB C to A plug and a standard USB A wall wart. Can I purchase a USB C to C cable and a USB C wall wart to charge the battery faster or would that ruin it? Currently, it takes 2 or 3 hours to charge mine completely which is extremely irritating.

I just looked at the USB C charger you provided and I'm annoyed they're charging $22 for the adapter without a cable. What cable would you recommend?

@Chris USB in all forms is smarter than generic plugs, it's USB C so nothing should fry with a C to C cable. If your as paranoid as I tend to be though and wanna be safe, a regular type A wall plug will do just fine, if you actually do that, you should get a smart power brick. Basically modern surge protectors with outlets and USB A and C built in, just remember to read the details about the USB C port because when I got mine, it didn't have enough volts to charge it or something like that, which is why I got that charger. The cable I got was a kind of magsafe braided power delivery cable, but that was a little overkill looking back, i keep the magnetic bit in the charging brick anyway. This one should do you just fine.

I actually like the concept of a magnetic cable. Would something like this work? It's a little expensive, but may be worth it. https://www.amazon.com/Griffin-BreakSaf … B01CQTK6GU

edit

I also found this 15W charger from Anker. That should work coupled with that Amazon basics cable. https://www.amazon.com/Charger-Anker-Po … _image_wld

@Chris Yep, that should do you just fine. I just worry about the magnetic bit falling out somehow. Just be careful with the charger, you could be ok with that one, but when I got one for my win2, I needed something that could charge at 12v or 15v. I'm not sure about the win1. Maybe have a look at the gpdwin subreddit just to be sure.

I'm not using Reddit. The website is horrible. I've sent an email to one of the support addresses for GPD asking about the maximum amount of power the Win and Win 2 can handle while charging. I've received responses from that address in the past, so I hope I'll receive another.

@Chris Hopefully that works out for you. What exactly is your beef with reddit though? If it's the hole layout, if you go to reddit, just replace the www in your address bar with old and it'll take you to the regular layout. Before I bought my Win2 I posted on the gpdwin subreddit and people there helped me choose the best seller to buy from.

Well, what  should I expect when I unbox the Win? I should get mine around Christmas, so yeah, Will it come up with the normal windows setup screen?

@techmaster20 Pretty much. Not sure what version of windows is installed but it should be at the screen normally seen after everything's done. I don't know how the key layout differs on the win1 though. It's definitely not as good as the win2.

Hey guys. After almost 9 months with this computer, I'm moving on from it. A few months back, I had gotten the m4800 and ever since then, the win 2 has seen almost 0 use. I honestly don't travel a whole lot at the moment and I'm finding my pixel 3A XL is actually an even better replacement for the win 2. So now I'm hoping to get $500 for it but will also take best offer. I take care of my stuff so the thing looks  practically brand new. If you plan to do audio production on this computer, either move it super far away from the mic or be prepared for fan noise. I was trying to produce podcasts with it and while the computer itself has the power to do audio editing it is just not suitable for me and how I personally produce audio. This thing is truly a niche  product and I really feel like you really either know for a fact you will use the computer and know for pretty sure it will fit in your life or have extra income to buy it. 2 reasons why I want to sell it, first and main reason, over the past 2 or 3 weeks I have been using my pixel more and more and I am finding the things I used the gpd win 2 for my pixel does just as well and is just one device I need to carry with me. I'm the type of person that prefers to have one laptop for everything and one phone for everything. Plus I really could use the money at the moment. At first the win 2 was working out awesome for me because I just really did not like using my i Phone unless I needed to so that really cut down on my usage of the iPhone.  Then by chance I just happened to play with a pixel and was really blown away on what I was experiencing. The main thing I did with the win 2 was web browsing and the occasional audio game or production or listened to music. But my pixel can do all 3 for me and it is something I carry with me everyday. But it is pretty freaking sweet to have a laptop to throw in your pocket. I think in a few years once I'm in the market for a computer I may explore these types of machines again. Maybe by that time, we will have i5 or i7 quality power in these things.

2019-07-23 17:58:58

I think I'm also trying to sell mine as well.. Wanted to create a new topic for it but for some reason I keep getting error messages, unless I'm doing something wrong, maybe it's just safari.. If anyone happens to chance across this thread I'm looking for around $450 for it and it's been moderately used, with the only issue being I had the screen cable defect where it snaps, but I got that fixed, no other problems at all.. I'm trying to get rid of it quickly since i'm trying to build a new PC.

Hello everyone. so after a year and buying and selling a gpd win 2, I can say that I think the future is very bright for these kinds of products. In my personal opinion, the core 3s are just a bit below my personal requirments to be able to use the computer smoothly. I do a lot of youtube and video watching and the win 2's fan was just way too loud. I'd be over at people's houses and everyone woudl hear the fan the minute I started to watch a video or something. I know it's a small computer and all that but right now, I feel like the prices are just a bit too high for the specs you get. So to anyone looking to buy, if you are looking for form over function then that is what you will get. the pocket laptop idea is awesome and I'm really hoping within the next 2 years this technology will be a bit more improved. Rocket league is about the limit of the computer. and rocket league is not a very intense game. Plus the particular unit I had still had the power issues so whenever I charged it, the thing would shut off forcing a windows restart. Plus the newer models now use the 5 A charging instead of just 2 A. My biggest concern about this  computer was repairs and I heard gpd is not very good in that department. as someone who relies on my computer I just could not take that chance. But this laptop I have it is very easy to get repaired if need be. So I'll continue to tote around this m4800 for a few years. I'll be checking out the latest developments in this area.
