I have the test team using Addolis's videos to make the basis of the game play guide. I can't hear well enough to sufficiently do it myself. Thanks for the help, Addolis. - Karen Stevens

Hey guys, I'm Robert ill be helping Karen with blind guide for Madden.

@ post 102 awesome explanation for creating your own franchise. can't wait to hear the match for that created franchise.

going in to the wilds, collecting pokedex, and capturing them are my kind of thing,
training them, making them evolve, and generally making them stronger is my ultimate goal,
fighting other manamon tamers, winning the tournament, and fighting octoros are what these manamons like to do,
and ultimately, I become the master of mana!

I only wish Mixer didn't have such a low audio quality and it's in mono.
I heard that Mixer lowers the quality and streams in mono if you have a connection that's not up to their standards.

Despite this, is there a way to set the simple season in Connected Franchise? It would be mostly blind players, but if it has to be on full control that is going to be seriously difficult. I myself am one of those people who'd like to experience full control, but even with OCR that is going to be one hell of a challenge with dynamic menus. I wouldn't mind inviting anyone willing to play by our rules in a franchise, but that's the thing.
Sighted people would probably want us to play on competitive style, where stick movement, manually running the ball if ball carrior, etc, matter a lot more, even if playing as a coach roll. Also, I've only heard halftime reports I think from custom Play Now games where they're just choosing teams. The real NFL, in the halftime reports, recounts what is going on in the other games in the league as well, whereas the Madden halftime report is a short highlight reel. Curious in Franchise if this changes? Does poor Larry have a few more lines to talk other than the pre-game short intro and halftime report?

Hi.
@Darrel: Thanks a ton for your awesome explanation. I wander how you are able to remember all that. I look so much forward to the upcoming videos.
@Karen: Are you hearing impaired or did I read one of your earlier comments wrong? It would be interesting to hear how Madden and other games are played with a hearing impairment.
After having realized how complex all those menus are in the EA sports games, I got the following idea:
1. It would be extremely helpful if you could make some settings which could be turned on and off, which stops the menus from going in loops. In this way, you can count through the menus, start from the top or bottom if you get lost and in this way get a better idea on where you are. This is what makes the Playstation and the older psp consoles very usable for blind people, because the menus don't go in loops. Also, it would be great to have a setting which doesn't remember where you left the menus, but always starts at the top. However, if the menus don't go in loop, you can just manually go to the top if needed.
2. When having such complex menus, I wander if it would be possible that you develop your own simple screenreader which simply reads out the menus in your games. Not recorded voice files, but text to speech reading. Such screenreader don't have to be advanced at all like the screenreaders we are using for Windows, Mac, tablets, smartphones etc. All it have to do is to read out the text which the cursor has selected. If you develop such a screenreader which works in your game engine, you could put this screenreader in all your games for reading the menus instead of recording every single menu and option in all games. So why make your own screenreader for your engine when some consoles already have text to speech? Well, only the XBox have a screenreader function which can work together with games. The screenreader on the Playstation does only work in the US, because Sony don't care much about accessibility and won't release the screenreader world wide. However if they did, you can't make this screenreader work inside games. For those who are playing on the computer on different operating systems do have a screenreader if needed, but they don't work in games. Finally, some people are also playing on other consoles such as psp, the Nintendo consoles and maybe others which don't have any screenreader at all. The final argument: It is not only blind people who are using screenreaders or text to speech. It is used by people who are having reading difficulties as well, and there are extremely many people with reading difficulties world wide. So if you choose to make a text to speech feature which works in all games in the future, it will be used by many people.
@rblake A huge welcome to the forum. Thanks a lot for joining the discussion. I look very much forward to hear more from you.

@102
Thanks for creating all the content you have, I need to start watching it now.  I will be happy to help yourself and Karen with HTML if I can in terms of structure etc though as others have said, a single page with navigation within that page (facilitated via virtual includes, which I can try and assist with) would be a good way to go.

@107
Just wanted to say that the technology you suggest for spoken menus exists, only via Microsoft consoles (i.e. the Xbox One).  It's called the Microsoft Speech Synthesis API and also allows for speaking of in-game UI elements, such as health and the like (at least in theory, though the latter application hasn't really been discussed).  Currently no games use it but it's hoped that developers will pick it up sooner rather than later.  I've been doing what I can to spread awareness of it.

Your ideas about toggles for wrapping/non-wrapping menus are pretty solid, though the thing that would need to be taken into account is navigation to enable those settings in the first place smile.

@104
Welcome to the forum. I and likely others are happy to assist where we can with the guide.

Looking forward to playing this when the update drops.

Regards,
Sightless Kombat.

Hello everyone,
How I remembered that content? I didn't My girlfriend who is absolutely amazing, and  does have some vision, read me every bit of text, and had me copy it in to a text document.  She deserves more credit that I do. No, Poor LR, doesn't get anymore airtime  in this adition, sadly.  Half time presentation and pregame presentation is something i'm bugging the developers about, smile.  I will assume, that you can  set the same settings on connect franchise as well. That's something I'll verify when I get a chance.  I'll do the match in that franchise when I get the chance as well.  Now that I know that mixer degrades the quality,  Can anyone suggest an alternative?  I do not have the money for expensive hardware,  and I would feel silly setting up a go fund me for something like this. Do I get the feeling that  I need to do a video about league invites? Problem with that, is that TTS needs to be put in the game.  Also, I apologize in my first vvideo, I mis read one of the options as Commentary files.  The actual option is community files, whare players post roster files and other files for other people to download.     Karren and her team of developers are amazing, taking on this chalange.  Robert welcome to the team, and get ready for a crazy ride.  I want to clean up the text document,  and then I would like to share it.  Please, if there are anymore requests or questions, shoot them here, I'll be happy to answer them if I can.

@SLJ - I'm almost legally deaf, which makes picking out audio cues nearly impossible. This is why rblake is helping with the guide, and also why I chose to use rumbles as additional cues. Side effect is that I was able to get a touchdown blindfolded and without audio, so offense is minimally deaf-blind friendly.
@Sightless Kombat - The engine currently doesn't support any TTS API and would have to be upgraded. This is actually a pretty big undertaking, so it might be awhile before you see any developer use it.

2017-08-29 20:48:27

Would using voiceovers for the menus be easier?  It would be naturally more caustly though.

2017-08-29 21:20:27 (edited by ea_accessible 2017-08-30 20:49:35)

@burak - In the long run, no, it wouldn't be easier. Audio timing is an important as content - otherwise you'd get elements read at inappropriate times, read in the wrong order, not read at all, or all words spoken simultaneously. These are solvable problems, but are big enough issues where they aren't candidates for game patches.

2017-08-29 23:29:17 (edited by ea_accessible 2017-08-29 23:54:22)

I'm going to post snippets of the guide here as I go. Here's how to turn on accessible rumbles once the patch hits. You can turn this on before the patch hits, as I re-purposed the enlarge setting to handle rumbles - the instructions do not change. I'm trying to figure out how to handle PS4/XB1 differences - I can't show console favoritism on EA's blog, so must have both. How's this?

Note: it's possible there is a sound when backing out of a menu, and it's just totally inaudible to my defective hearing. I'll double-check.

Turning on Vision Assists

Visual Assists provide additional rumbles that will assist with blind game play.

From the Main Menu:
•    Hold down right on the left stick until you feel repeated rumbles.
•    Hit Xbox:A PS4:X to enter the customize Menu.
•    Hit down on the dpad twice to get to settings.
•    Hit Xbox:A PS4:X to go to Settings.
•    Hit Xbox:A PS4:X again to go to setting adjustments.
•    Hit down 4 times to select Visual Feedback.
•    Hit Xbox:A PS4:X to open Visual Feedback.
•    Hold down on the left stick until you feel repeated rumbles.
•    Hit up 3 times to go to Vision Assists.
•    Hit right on the dpad to turn on vision assists, which includes optional accessibility rumbles.
•    Tap the Xbox:B PS4:Circle for a couple of seconds to get back to the main menu. If you feel a rumble when you hit right on the dpad, you are at the main menu.

2017-08-30 00:56:35

Also, apologies for how LONG those instructions are. You only need to do them once, and then the setting will be saved. I hope to shorten the number of steps in a future release.

2017-08-30 02:20:34

Sounds good to me thus far.

2017-08-30 04:23:07

Well done on the instructions Karren.
I'm going to  post the next video in the series.
This is the first game for the franchise that was created in the previous video. I tried to explain audio cues and other things along the way, but eventually I go quiet, allowing the game to speak for its self.  When the  changes come, I'll be happy to do a comparison.   If there are any other videos you guys want, please feel free to post them here.

@Karen:
Thanks for explaining about your hearing impairment. The sounds in the menu are very low, and they get easily drowned by the music. It's really a great idea to use rumble feedback instead.
The steps in the guide confuses me a bit. So, holding the left analog stick up, down, left or right should do the same like the d-pad? Or am I wrong? Then I don't get how you can enter a custom menu by holding the left analog stick in a direction.
What do you think about my previously mentioned idea for adding a text to speech feature in your game engine which works in all games?

Best regards SLJ.

Wow... A big thumbs up and thank you for making the latest video. This really gives me a good idea of what the gameplay is like... Very well described.
I could imagine the gameplay being easier than it sounds like in the video. It sounds a bit confusing, and I wouldn't be able to pick up the game and start playing. But I think it makes more sense when you're actually playing the game yourself. The good thing is that you know when you have failed. big_smile
If most of the sports games are played like this, then I'm sure they can be played as well after a lot of practise. I wish I had a sighted friend who likes playing sports games, because I really wanna try this for myself.

Best regards SLJ.

welcome to the forum Robbert and thank you for your help in developing this project.

2017-08-30 23:38:13

@SLJ - left stick and dpad to work similarly on the menu, but the stick is analog and dpad is digital. It's easier to move a precise number of steps with the dpad. I'll update the instructions to this, so it's hopefully less confusing to others.

2017-08-30 23:39:17

Here's instructions on how to log in for the first time, followed up updated instructions of how to turn on visual assists. Feedback welcome, as I want to make this as clear as possible. I will be posting to EA's site once we're all in agreement.

Is this enough detail for volume?

Section Volume Control

From the Main Menu:
•    Hold down right on dpad until you feel repeated rumbles.
•    Press Xbox:A PS4:X to enter the customize Menu.
•    Press down on the dpad twice to get to settings.
•    Press Xbox:A PS4:X to go to Settings.

All settings can be changed using left and right on the dpad. All settings can be navigated between using up and down on the dpad. Settings save automatically. Tap the Xbox:B PS4:Circle for a couple of seconds to get back to the main menu.
The settings are in the following order:
•    Master Volume
•    Audio Mix
•    In-Game Commentary
•    Stadium Speakers
•    Crowd Volume
•    On the Field
•    Menu Music
•    Menu SFX (Sound Effects)
All settings are sliders except Audio Mix. All sliders move between 0 and 100 and you will feel rumbles if you try to slide past that range.
Audio Mix has the following options:
-    Broadcast, which makes all sliders 100%.
-    Field, which mutes in game commentary and reduces stadium speakers and crowd volume.
-    Custom – allows setting slides to any value. Changing a slider automatically switches audio mix to custom.
