Hi there,

I'd love to know the status of the mac version of this somebody (Jack?) posted about earlier. It seemed like it wasn't quite complete, but anything would be better than needing to run a VM inside of another VM in order to get this working. smile

Thanks for any updates, and for providing such a great bit of history.

Hi,
I have tried both running DOSbox under mac and under a VM. The Mac one simply didn't start up because of a problem with SDL. I'm not sure what the issue is, since the error message is not very descriptive, but I could look it up on Google. Inside a VM DOSbox ia quite sluggish. It works, but the speech is way less responsive than it is on a native Windows system.
By the way, I just created a talking DOSbox mailing list for those of you who like that system of talking. You can join it by sending an empty E-mail to [email protected]

there is now a talking dosBox email list. it is at
[email protected]    I think Gillam said he would get the braille n speak server to output through decTalk access32 rather than espeak. But it would ultimately be good if we could make a symphonics or dectalk pc server, this way there would be no more need for com0com.

yeah, that would be awsom. combine that with a software recreation of the votrax chip used on the bns.

@ammericandad2005 about your first post, there is no software emulation of any of the Votrax chips just yet. About your second post, midiplay can generate monophonic PC speaker music out of a midi file, or you can just use GWBasic's sound function.

also to let everyone know thanks to Guillem we will soon have talking dosbox having the dos screen readers pass their output through NVDA screen reader. You put it to sleep first with in laptop mode capslock shift z. But I am not sure if it will still require you to have com0com, python27 and pyserial installed or not.

thanks!
by the way, coukld ou make a gwbasic program that causes the pc speaker to generate a version of "there are 7 days"?

Hi.
Writing tones and stuff in gwbasic is fun.
The only limit I can find is it only allows one noteat a time.
I'm thinking of trying to make it play take me out to the ball game.
I wonder if it's possible to copy and paste from within dosbox. If so, I can paste some example code here to make it play something.

We have not heard from Piotr on here in awhile. I wonder is he still working on getting better speech in talking dosbox or did guillem take that over? As I think I said earlier Guillem told me he has a version of talking dosbox that send the dos screen reader output to NVDA's controller client. So that would let us use better voices.

will that version be released?
also, I found midiplay myself, and started messing around with it. I managed to make it play a pc speaker version of one of the songs on the tts preschool album (specificly, "ice cream man"), using a midi file I made of it in qws.

Hello,
here isa  very dirty and quick compile of the redirection program I'm working on. Be sure to read the readme file. It may be included with talking DOSbox in the future, but for now, you can use this. Keep in mind this is not the final version and thus it's lacking many features.

Thank you.

To those wondering, I'm not dead, it's just that I'm somewhat busy with school and when I come back home quite often I just don't feel like working on anything big.
There will be a new version eventually, and it will include a screen reader emulator. Guillem and myself are good friends so we talk pretty much every day. It's a very good idea to be patient (hint: sending me 5 messages asking the same thing in the spam of 2 days is not going to make things go any faster) ;-)

Hi,
oh wow, I can't believe how some people just can't have some patience. Honestly, let the guy live his life and wait, you'll get your new version soon enough!
Sorry, but that had to be said.

Hi,
I have a problem with the new release. Basically having Com0 installed, the port pair going to COM8 and COM9 respectively, if I launch "startsnd" I hear no "ready" message. DosBox is launched by the batch script, so I type "asap" and I just hear a medium-pitched sound. What's happening?

Sukil

it should be virtual pair 1, not virtual pair 0. It's working for me, though.

It's Virtual Pair 1, and still doesn't work.

Then I don't know what to tell you. I was able to use com0com with no issues. and you don't need pithon or piserial anymore. I know you're accustomed to having to install it from the windows 3.1 vm, but they are now obsolete in terms of dos box requirements.

is it based on the original version of the datajake hack (the one that has windows 3.1 on it)?

I have a problem. When I start a game, jaws stops talking, and it looks like a black screen comes up.

I haven't been on audiogames forum in quite some time, and this is a nice idea, pitermach, only pitty that many other developers suddenly program their own versions of this, when you were the first to come up with it.
Still, I'm about to try this for the first time, I really like the idea of putting out speech on the old ASAP manner with a bns emulator. Maybe another guy who has a Juno can still use this with his hardware. You perhaps know who I'm talking of peter.

To know, and not to do, is not to know.
