I would throw my hat in there, except that I hate wearin hats!
Actually, the real reason i'm not onna is cause I feel that i'm too yung to fully comprehend the responsibilities of being a mod, and I also tend to loose my temper with really stupid people like piraters, and code stealers.
I do think if I had a group with others with good comunication skills, I would do decently, and if you were ok with a 13 year old mod, then maybe?
I don't have all the time in the world, sense I have school, but I will have 6th period off for a little while so I can do that. And I won't be neededd the entire time cause Jade's going crazy with righting like 50 topics a day and spending all his time on the forum lol.
understand and respect the rules: Even though I do like to speak my mind wen people deserve it, but I can hold my tongue, o rin this case fingers, wen I absolutely need to. So, yes, I do respect and understand the rules.
patience: Meh. Is pretty much all i gotta say. As I said, I'm not the most patient person ever, but if I get absolutely enraged or something I'm perfectly able to take a break and come back.
self awareness, and awareness of personal biases. I'll be perfectly honest with you and say I don't completely understand the second thing, do you mean how others see things? If that's what you mean, then I understand people, and myself. Although I could use some work on that.
Awareness of personal weaknesses and a willingness to work on them: Of course I see my weaknesses, and probably others that I don't know about exist, but I'll find that out as I go. I'm willing to work on them. Some of them that I know about are: I loose my temper sometimes. I'm not! I repeat! not! n! o! t! a morning person, or really a late night person, unless I'm playing games, so I might have a litttle less tolerance in the morning, but it shouldn't be that big of a deal. I've been told I'm a little emotionally unstable sometimes, witch I see. Not unstable enough to be an issue, I guess I could word that  A little differently, but Jade's the wordy one here, not me! Also my grammar's no where near the best, and I type a little to fast so I tend to mistype some things sometimes. I don't have  any previous full time admin expierence, but I have some small every now and then experience with an admin role on cm, yes, cm, after I said I hate code stealers, I did not know it was a clone at the time, as I fas fairly knew to online stuff.
an open mind and a flexible perspective: definitely, I easily except differences, and if I were to get this position, I would hope the team does too, cause they would to take on a 13 year old.
:a clean or relatively clean history  I've only been warned once bye sebby for attacking mstuff002, I think was te name, for talking about cracks and stuff, but I then made it into a joke after beeing warned, so I didn't hold it up, although I still do hate pirates, matee.
An honest desire to help the community grow: I really do want to help this comunity out of this hellhole It's fallen into, it looks like a daunting task, but I think with a solid team we could do it.

So that's probably the wordiest post I'll ever put on this forum, hope you enjoyed. Please remember I wouldn't say know to a position, but I don't expect it to happen, on account of my age and vary unfortunate lack of expierence, and my pursonal weaknessess.
I would personally vote for liam though

One of you made reference to the current staff being admins.
Tell me truthfully, wouldn't you folks get pretty angry if I was made an admin?

The point about popularity contests. This only means that just because you nominate someone doesn't mean they'll get in, doesn't mean we'll follow through. This is a public gauge of who the community likes and why. So far, so good.

Liam, our warning rule is a three-strikes thing, but piracy = cracks, basically, and I'm hugely against it, as are the other mods/admin. I think it's even covered in the rules, and if it's not, it should be. Just making a half reference to cracks is worth a caution or a warning. Distributing cracks outright? Big trouble. The harm this sort of thing does to the community is damn near incalculable.

I have a feeling the users are interested in newsposters being potentially moved up to moderators rather than admins. Yes, they are different. To be clear, an administrator technically has full reign over not only the forum, but the board as well - they could install extensions/configure the board to fend off spambots with different methods, etc. As for the humor/sarcasm discussion I'll chime in on that one too, since I've been apt to engage in such myself; Two things. It's subjective as we all know, and I think it's kind of been realized there is a time and place for it, all be it on here we're pretty clear when someone is posting as just another user vs when they are posting in...
Moderation!
Just kidding, but you get the idea. People know the intent if the moderation tag is applied vs if it isn't. That's just my general view on that.
And if it hasn't been said yet - yes, I most certainly cote for Liam and Keyisfull. They would certainly make for good admins.

Riad wrote:

My vote goes for Liam of course, though I hope he gets appointed after he releases Brain Station which I've been dying to put my hands on (a mod developper may slow down developing-wise to be a good moderator).

I kind of understand where you're going, but two things.
1. I think there are things in addition to moderating a forum that could slow down development even more so; a 9to5 job, life in general, or other unexpected things that arise. I will say a few of the moderators had a lot on their plate, Aprone was sort of a multi-admin as it were since he moderated this forum, ran and administrated his online games, worked during the day, and developed games and utilities. While I"m not saying everyone does this, it is certainly possible, though it is entirely up to the person whether they feel they have enough time, so I'm not trying to speak for anyone here.
2. Just as long as we are patient for Liam to finish Brain Station, we're good.
And now after addressing hopefully everyone, I'm throwing my hat into the ring as well.
1. Competent communication skills (the stronger the better)
This I do have; English in particular being my first language, and addressing everyone's concerns as they appear, just to name a few.
2. Ability to work well within a team
I've done this before, and I've remained pretty level-headed while giving everyone a chance, not overpowering the role over anyone else.
3. respect for the rules and an understanding of how and why they operate as they do
While yes I may inquire about a certain one (even if not every opportunity that arises) or suggest improvements, I do understand the rules, how they work, and why they're in place.
4. patience
No, it is not often that I lose my sanity; I'm pretty patient with people and it usually takes a lot to get me on edge. Generally speaking, I"m pretty patient. Even during these last few weeks I have surprisingly kept my cool. <sarcasm>Again, I generally try to assess the whole situation then gradually...*slings mud at all involved!*</sarcasm>
*sidenote: To the people addressing the sarcasm concern, I just accidentally demonstrated a way to clearly denote it. Back on topic now.
5. self-awareness, and awareness of personal biases
This is one of the things I've always thought needs to be left at the door in general. Playing favorites is never a good thing when moderating anything, so I too would not do that, or hold any personal biases. Being objective is the most helpful for everyone.
6. Awareness of personal weaknesses and a willingness to work on them
Yes, and this holds true if someone were to point it out directly. I am not unwilling to take constructive criticism and work on it effectively.
7. an open mind and a flexible perspective
That too, again I am willing to look at both sides of whatever issues arise and try to address both.
8. The ability to devote a reasonable amount of time each week to the governing of the forum
Let's see. I'm in central timezone, so I realize people will obviously be ahead or behind that as it were. That being said, while I am busy during the morning and afternoon of most weeks, that, 1. depending on the timing of all this most likely wouldn't even be the case, and 2. That doesn't necessarily mean I can't try and find a moment or two to address concerns that need my attention. That being said, all other times of the day I would be free to do whatever.
9. a clean or relatively clean history (this means that if you've had a lot of bans or are getting warned every few weeks or so, you probably aren't a good fit, unless you tick all the other boxes and can provide some good reasons as to why your behaviour should be ignored or tolerated)
For the record, I can't remember ever being warned or worse.
10. An honest desire to help the community grow and rebuild; this is a tumultuous time, and it's not going to be easy
I honestly think that while no this certainly isn't easy, you don't get anywhere if you don't try; that being said, not only do I think I could manage it, but I can say the same for this as a whole. As long as we stay calm and try to push forward I think we can overcome this and get things back to normal.

2018-11-09 17:24:37

My vote definitely goes for Liam, fellow members have done a good job explaining the reasons big_smile.
One person that I think folks didn't yet propose is: Cae Jones. I think he really well fits such positions.

I think people indirectly did propose him by suggesting newsposters be moved up to moderators.

2018-11-09 17:58:23

I possessed all the ten qualifications listed in post 1, except 8. Due to my health, there are times when I have loads of time to help out. But this year especially, my health has been a very nasty roller coaster.
I was deeply honored, and a lot surprised, when Dark asked me to become a moderator.
The recent crapstorm on this forum came at a time when I had just lost a relatively young cousin who I loved dearly, and the medication that was helping me for the first time in 20 years had been discontinued. So I stepped down from everything, because I felt that I was no good to any one at that point.
If there is a real need for help in the future, I would reconsider if asked.
I don't have a ton of posts here, but if you would like to look at them and see how I have communicated on issues in the past, feel free to do so.
To my knowledge, I have never had a conflict with anyone on this site. I like everybody.
So, in the future, if you feel that I am qualified, and if you think it might assuage some concern that women are not represented here, health permitting, I would help out again.
At first, I thought there would be not a snowball's chance in Hell that I would ever be a moderator again.
But upon reconsideration, it occurs to me that if you value something, and it's been good to you in the past, you can't just let it corrode or die.
That's why I am making this post at all, because I do want to see this community rebuild and get back to the fun and calm place it used to be.
Thank you.

2018-11-09 18:22:04 (edited by cartertemm 2018-11-09 18:47:08)

I waited a while before writing this, as I wanted to make absolute sure I possessed the wherewithal and time required to hold such a position.

To start out, do I really need to give Liam another vote? Here it is anyway.

Figured I'd throw my hat into the ring as well, thanks Defender.

My morning routine basically consists of sifting through various topics as an old man might a newspaper. So time investment wouldn't be any hinder.

I've been on both sides of the issues of unauthorized code usage, piracy, and copyright violation, starting out by supporting piracy due to an inability to purchase the games and programs I wanted. I guess my modest personality didn't help matters much. I just couldn't bring myself to rely on others to purchase software for me seeing as I was unable to give back. the mindset was similar to if just one person cracks a product it won't matter in the long run, after all don't these folks rake in cash by the minute? Not to mention, creating cracks is challenging and fun so why not? However, this all changed after getting into software development and fully realizing the impact just a single person could have. Now I'm firmly against the practice.

Unpopular opinion time. Anyone who says there working off a clean slate is lying. We've all messed up a time or two, sweeping that under the rug is pointless. Upon seeing someone violating copyright or engaging in piracy, my first step is to consider myself a while back. I'm sure I have old e-mails wherein I had been bashed from all sides for suggesting someone download a keygen rather than fork over $20. These were nothing but detrimental, and merely led to more pointless flaming. I saw no problem with my actions, and nobody bothered to consider my frame of reference. So we were in effect at a standstill. This occurs all too often. In fact, many countries openly endorse piracy, so their is certainly an excuse. I'd much rather hand out a simple warning and share personal experience so others don't end up getting caught up by the same pitfalls.

In reference to unauthorized code usage (much better than the term clone methinks), I was heavily involved for an extremely short time. As later a victim, my sympathy is with those effected. I have always been resolute in discouragement, gathering evidence where enough wasn't originally provided, and doing everything in my power to make sure it isn't spread through such a large voice in the community.
Both of these are harmful and weaken our strength as a whole, in addition to showing blatant disrespect to those who're the reason we're here in the first place.

Although I have sometimes been known to show a derisive/sarcastic writing style, I'm doing my best to resist the temptation in a formal environment. At least I can't remember ever receiving a warning of any kind in this community.

I've had quite a bit of experience in the field, for better or for worse. I started out by administrating a mailing list at the age of 11 (cringes), note to self: look back at archives for memories sake. Since then I've learned a lot from my time with games. I'm a strong believer in instruction and qualification gained from experience.
As most of you probably know, I dedicated a good chunk of my time to developing redspot during it's last 6 months of existence.
Rewind two years: The game started out without any form of communication amung staff. The game saw a need for administration, so members of the closest circle of players and testers were promoted. For all intense and purposes admins were free to ride rough shot over players with their mighty buttons and twitchy ban fingers, if so desired. On such a game where emotions run high, this wasn't a good thing, at... all. Classic one bad peach scenario. Not only did players totally disregard authority, in some instances they deliberately pissed off the nearest admin for no better reason than proof of disorganization. For some the objective wasn't kill your foes, but fuel the fire and provoke authority until bans are thrown around.

Point? Even though everyone involved had true intentions, their were evident issues, the same of which I see plaguing this forum right now. I genuinely believe such past experience could be employed to make this forum a better place all around. In effect I'm ready to contribute where I can to this end, kingom crafter or moderator rank notwithstanding.

While I think I might meet 8/10 of the requirements, I fail utterly at 1 and 2. If you want me anyway, I'd be up for it, however, I would think those are some relevant weaknesses.

just seeing this now and someone asked me why I didn't think of this as a voting system. It is more of a nomination system. And as Jade said, just because a person was nominated many times does not mean he will make it to the mod team, and the mods have not set a day or time for anything.
On the differences between user groups: I believe that these should be added to the rules as well. Staff members should be at least as accountable to rule following as standard members, and probably more so. If there is some way to do so, all staff actions, such as closing topics, banning users, unrestricting new users, stickying topics, etc, should be logged. Moderation warnings are searchable with the search function, as long as the staff marks a moderation warning with some sort of moderation tag.

ALong with their elevated rights, staff members also have elevated responsibilities, and both of these should be carefully thought out and written plainly in the rules. What powers does an administrator have that a moderator does not? Do news posters and database editors have any other powers besides posting to the newsroom or editing the database? We can guess but we don't really know unless it's written down.

Fellow gamers,

This is a hard time for the forum, and I am deeply saddened by the current happenings. I am fairly disappointed by both users and moderators alike. But this is not why I am here. I am not here to point fingers at or put the blame on anyone, because I believe in change and hope that we can put this behind us. I believe that this community can thrive again. But for that to happen, we do need transparency, and we need people who are able to mediate. No matter the rank, we all are gamers at heart, and we need to unite and understand each other, especially now.

I would like to volunteer as a moderator, be it permanent or temporary, because I believe that I can be of assistance for the community.

To answer Jayde's questions, which will hopefully give you a rundown of what you can expect:

1. Communication skills

I am working on my English Master's degree, hopefully communicating should not pose difficulties at this point smile

This also means that I do have multiculturall competence, including the required awareness and openness towards cultures.

2. Teamwork

I have been part of various developer and writer teams, both as a member and a team leader. I am a good mediator, and have the necessary skills to act alone, if needed.

I am inclined to step up and suggest new things, even if they are drastic changes.

As a member, I respect the team rules, after all, a team is only a team as long as there is transparency between its members.

As a leader, my expectations are never higher than the level I set for myself, and I am aware of the responsibility and the trust I was given.

3. respect for and an understanding of the rules

See above.

4, 5, 6, 7: If there is anything that can teach you these sought for values, then I believe it is martial arts. I have been an avid practitioner and a devoted student for over fifteen years.

I am also a promoter of mindfulness meditation, currently being an instructor for a small group.

8. Devotion

I am checking the forum daily, and I can put aside more time, if needed, depending on the size of the moderation team and the amount of pressure.

9. Am I clean?

Hopefully, I am not banned by the time I am posting this smile. If all's well, I should be.

10. The desire to help

We are all gamers at heart. This is why we are here. I don't think anyone wishes this community to disappear, given that this is the only one, thus the best, we have. It would be an honor.

Having said that, I am aware that if I am accepted, 'Now I am playing with power.'

Happy gaming!

I've said my piece. If I get picked, fair enough. If I don't, again, fair enough.

@Carter: I'd argue a much better argument against cracks to go with a warning is tales of malware/viruses/ransomware etc. However, when there's cases of AAA publishers *having to crack* their own games to beat their own DRM....it sorta puts a hole in the argument. My solution would be a warning, and an explanation of why cracks are bad. Not a 'this hurts the community' argument, because not everyone gets that, but e 'Hey, I'm going to warn you, but you'll probably just get the crack anyhow. I want you to be aware of the risks involved to the community and your computer. You hurt developers, yes....but you run the risk of completely destroying your OS by using cracks. Having read this warning, I can't stop you getting cracks elsewhere...but now you know the dangers, think twice. A working computer is worth more than cracking <insert software here> because unless you, yourself made said crack, you don't know what's in it'

That'd be my response to cracks. I've used them. I've used them on older games, simply because a lot of mine are on CD, and my newest laptop doesn't have a CD drive, So there is a flimsy justification to use cracks. However. I don't distribute them, and they are solely kept on my own machine for my use to get software I legally own, working. That's not the same, I feel, as coming on here and spreading a crack for something I don't own. Say I own Manaman and have no internet to activate it, but a legal copy, legal key, I should, on my own computer, with no network access, and without giving it to anyone else, be able to play my game, given I purchased it

Sorry for the OT, wanted to explain a bit more. Let's take the ethics discussion to PMs

I'd throw my hat in if it weren't for the fact that:
1. I've got competent communication skills, though one of my fault is that I'm very argumentative sometimes, and those that don't know me well can certainly take it the wrong way. Those who know me well know that I enjoy debating with people; I take it as a way of strengthening my intellect and learning information.
2. I am good at working within teams, though I can be under-assertive sometimes (I know what your thinking, you've probably just verbalized a loud "What!"). I'm administrating a community and all the services it has (though I've offloaded that to others too), so am learning to assert my authority when necessary.
3. I can respect rules so long as they are sensible and make sense to me, and I find them reasonable. If someone makes a rule though, them and I may need to discuss in great depth of how it actually would work and how is reasonable. I am however willing to protest a rule (and whether it is enforceable or not) if it seems illogical at the time.
4. I have patients -- great depths of it. Sometimes my anger can limit my patients with someone. This isn't to say I have major anger management problems; I can e very passionate about something though.
5. I am aware of my biases, definitely; though it may take a bit of prodding for me to recognize that what I am about to do could be from bias rather than fairness.
6. As probably already guessed, I'm aware of my weaknesses, and am trying to work on them. My natural reaction of debating the hell out of something is probably not going to go away for me. If you want to do something and I protest it, I probably have a good reason; a good idea would be that, if I do protest something that someone is doing, we both try to figure out, via discussion, exactly why I'm protesting that action and why tha someone wants to execute tha action.
7. I got this qualification, hands down. I'm willing to venture out of my comfort zone -- am quite happy in doing so, even.
8. This is the one major stumbling block in why I'm hesitant to do so. I'm administrating a community -- a small one at that -- as well as the fact that I'm in college (though the clas load is certainly lessening).
9. Lets admit, I don't fit this one. But I think that, really, there isn't one person on this forum that has a completely clean history. We all mess up sometimes. No argument from me on this one, though. Get to know me though and understand why I act the way I do, and then... smile.
10. I do have a desire to help the community; I just don't think I have the time. Maybe I can slip in a few days though, it really depends.
So, thoughts, yall? smile

very interesting topic, and it really shows a real desire to change. I would say that I fail in point 8 somewhat. I would not take the role of a mod or admin (it would be stressful) but I would be happy helping with maintaining or checking things. Articles, and so on. Editing. After all, I have done this in the past and it seems to work well within a community

I will throw my vote in for Jack as well. He's always had a pretty cool head, fun attitude and was able to argue his point effectively, like in allot of the pirating topics that cropped up a while ago.

Before angelgift Robjoy was kind of a jerk from what I remember... Or maybe he just came off that way because he's blunt, but either way it's not a very good thing for a mod.
Keyisfull was quite unmotivated and argumentative last time I really talked to him, but that was years ago and who knows how much has changed.
Either way, neither of them post much...

After seeing Carter's post I am putting him right up at the top of my list, probably even above Liam since he seems a bit more coolheaded, and I think his wide array of experiences and ability for personal reflection are a huge asset, along with the frequency at which he checks the forum and the fact that he knows a fare bit about the coding world.
I believe he would be utterly invaluable in the fight against piracy, possibly as a good cop to Liam's bad cop big_smile and that's one of the biggest issues facing this community.

So as it stands, my list right now in order from most favored to somewhat less favored would be as follows:
Carter Temm
Jaseoffire
Joseph Westhouse
Liam Ervin
Nick Adamson
Jack-
Cae Jones

i've been thinking of who should i vote and i think i will vote for liam, and second place carter.
also, i was thinking that blaze would be a good mod too, since i've seen him as admin on different games, so he has a lot of experience, and he has pretty good communication skills, which means he's good at handling situations.
