UPDATE: Episodes 2&3 have now been released including the accessible mode.

Hello everyone,

I am very happy to announce that the vi mode for Code 7 Episode 1 has now been officially released on Steam, Humble, itch.io, and Gamejolt. Code 7 is an episodic story-driven hacking adventure, where the player takes on the role of the hacker Alex and tries to save humanity from an evil AI. All dialogue is recorded by professional actors, making Code 7 a very immersive experience for visually-impaired players. (Links to buy at the end of this text)

We are committed to standing for inclusiveness in the games industry and therefore we are also going to donate 10% of all of our revenue from now until Christmas to a charity for visually impaired people here in Germany. ( www.blista.de - german only )

Please help us share this message for games without barriers with the hashtag #gamingwithoutbarriers on twitter and any social media you might have.

We hope you enjoy the game and are looking forward to more feedback.

Wonderful! I will be buying it today! Thanks!

2017-12-13 17:38:24

Rats! I spoke too soon. I wanted to buy through itch.io because it would be DRM free and not require any clients to download it, but the buy now links don't work. I click them and nothing happens. Thinking that they might open a new window that the pop up blocker might block, I turned it off, no help. I encountered this problem on eBay and the work around was to use pass through, still no help. I then tried using NVDA instead of JAWS, and still the buy now links don't do anything.

So I guess I won't be buying this game after all, pity.

Orko. Sorry, that you're having troubles buying the game... if you want, you can try the other DRM-free stores.
Humble: https://www.humblebundle.com/store/code-7
Game Jolt: https://gamejolt.com/games/code-7-a-tex … ture/53924

they also don't require a client. I hope it will work better in one of those stores.

Hi,
@Kevin, thank you so much for this, I really appreciate your devotion, and I love the game. I've purchased it about a day before the release in the Humble store, and I'm glad I did.
Just a small suggestion, would it be possible to set the speech rate please? I'm currently playing on the Mac, and I set the voice to Alex, but unfortunately, it's really slow compared to what I'm used to.

@Orko: Try the Humble store, Code 7's website has a frame with the store page, when you click the 'Play Now' link. There, you can buy the Digital Season Pass, which includes all the episodes.

Orko I've also set up a hopefully accessible store page, which also has a DRM-Free Build.
Please tell us if it is accesible.

@robjoy we've had the discussion about the speed several times but sadly it's not possible. sad

Hi, I just want to say that it was an honour testing this game. I love it. Luckily, I pre-ordered the season pass and got it on steam. Thanks for all the great work.

Hopefully, we'll get a fully accessible open world game someday.

This is for the Mac only, of course, Windows has symilar speech tags. So even if it is not possible programmatically to call the rate setter on an NSSpeechSynthesizer (see https://developer.apple.com/documentati … 450-rate), you can send a [[rate X]] with each string spoken, where X represents a number, in this case words per minute. In my case, this would be around 690-700.
On Windows, this is controlled by speed, I believe. (see https://supportdesk.win911.com/support/ … to-speech)

Theoretically, this should still work.

robjoy .. the problem is that we have no control over the Unity implementation of how the speech is called. We are just calling an external function. I will look into it again for the next episode though.

OK, I will look at the other options, however, if any of the other shops use a download client, I won't use them.

I tried the more options link on the accessible shop page looking for a PayPal option and that link did nothing too.

No game is worth this much hassle just to buy it, so I'm giving up and passing on it.

2017-12-13 18:44:54 (edited by kevin.glaap 2017-12-13 18:45:23)

Orko .. only Steam uses a download client. Everything else is just direct download options. I think that our own accessible shop is probably the best option because you just have to input your mail address and then you get a download link, but we are really curious on how to make that part more accesible too.

2017-12-13 18:47:07

@Kevin Yes, I assumed right then. You can embed these speech tags straight in the string that you send to the external function, and the speech synth will process it accordingly, you do not need access to the speech object at all.

@Orko: which browser are you using?

2017-12-13 19:13:48

Just to say that clicking buy now on ICHIO pops up a sort of web dialog/frame at the bottom of the page that is fully accessible when you scroll down. Worked brilliantly for me using google chrome and firefox ESR.

Here are my initial thoughts. I'm playing this on macOS High Sierra.
I noticed that the game started out using Karen. I had to go under settings and manually type the voice name I wanted to use. Is there a way to adjust this so the user can select a voice or use the system default? I also noticed that the speech rate cannot be adjusted. It is too slow for my liking. I tried adjusting the system speech rate under System Preferences, but that didn't help.
I have also noticed that the accessibility mode isn't remembered between sessions. I must press control v every time I launch the program.
I'm glad the accessible version is finally available. I'll play the game and will report back with my thoughts.

Chris .. sorry these are the limitations of the engine.
I'll try to look into the speed for the next episode, but right now there's sadly not much I can do.
Also, I have to tell the system what voice to use and I can't get a list of available voices so sadly you have to input it manually. We've added that input feature because of the feedback we got from you in the testing phase.

2017-12-13 21:24:24 (edited by robjoy 2017-12-13 21:28:11)

Here are my initial thoughts and bug reports, sadly.
@Kevin, I really believe that the speech tags will work, so this should be a great fix for everyone. The voices option is a good idea, even if you have to type in the voice name, it is better than nothing. If you can do the same with the rate, and send it with every text you speak, this should not take more than a few minutes to implement.
The accessibility mode is not remembered across sessions, this would be nice if it saved.
Some bugs.

Please note, this might contain spoilers for some.

DON'T READ below this, slight spoilers.

In the medical bay, if you adjust the pressure too much, it will still say that the door is unlocked. Then, it will set the mode to Automatic, however when you press enter on it, it will say that it has been set to automatic again.
If you set the correct pressure, it will revert back to automatic, however the pressure will not be equal. This definitely needs checking.

There is an instance, when you can tell Sam that one of the robots is not active. I suppose that that message will not go through, probably because someone is monitoring our conversation, but I'll see as we progress. At any rate, at this point, there seem to be an inaccessible something that pops up, because you need to press one of the number keys twice for it to work. I believe it was number 3.

The notes app just says G, but it does not seem to have anything, other than accepting the escape key to close it. It would be nice to write down things in here, in case this is not the intended option.

I should add more, as I continue playing.
Whoops, I forgot the most important one: when the robot tries to enter while Sam overrides the door, you can go to the Robot section, then override, if you do not have the correct password, and you type, 1234, for example, the game will lose speech. It will not react to anything.

Well.
You can either right click the links and open in another tab works in waterfox, or right click the links, coppy them and paste in the address bar, it does not hinder me.
Sometimes opening a link in a new tab on this site causes waterfox to crash itself and freeze but doing the address bar method works just as well and so well its fine and dandy.
I brought the game back in october when it just released, its really good to have had early testing, I really enjoyed what I played.
The maze is like a rubix cube, its really challenging quite hard to nut out.
Sadly while I had made time last week, several things in my life changed such that its now time to get ready for christmas in ernist, shopping last week and yesterday, the tree this friday, food shopping today, I have a few library books I really should read and get finnished, and so on and so on.
I will return to this game later on sadly its going to be after the heroes call rpg runthrough and probably eurofly2 release, and thaumistry which I havn't really doodled with as such.
At least I have choice of some really great games.
Its really good you can even have accessibility type things in unity even though it aint perfect.
On the subject of steam, yeah the drm in it plus the inaccessibility of the client.
I actually brought a few books on audible, I downloaded them, read them tethered to my laptop the only device I had but to be honest I didn't enjoy the audible system at all, the last books I have are drm hacks via a vpn and to be honest I really hate drm content.
I want my stuff whereever I want and whenever I want.
Which is why I am sad at the loss of the ms music store.
Its also why I really push for games I can play without client software.
The only software that I would concidder is guidedog, but not much is released on there and they don't support paypal, you also need a good net connection, to play the things but they work.
Now its a pitty the blind don't have an accessible steam platform that you could play everywhere but still.
The next thing I want when you have everything done on the games eps is the soundtrack to the entire thing on bandcamp would gladly get that.
